Improvisation is the art of being able to think of and create ideas in a split second, with little or no warning as to what you are creating. It requires playwrights, directors and actors to think of (in a minimal amount of time) a creative concept in which they will perform straight away. Even so, before writing the script, playwrights must improvise some ideas to see what works and what doesn’t. Throughout the whole process of writing their play, playwrights will improvise every idea. In some cases however, playwrights will write a play, then use improvisation to work out many elements of their play like the main focus or dramatic tension. Playwrights like Tyler Perry use improvisation to improve their work. Tyler Perry would write his piece, have it performed then “make up” the parts that needed work and add it to the script. Playwrights can also use improvisation as a starting point for a piece they are working on. By just improvising short scenes, playwrights can come up with some of their best work and will be able to work from there. In the process of play building, improvisation is a vital element. Before writing up a script, you must have gone through the scenes multiple times, improvising new ideas or using improvisation to develop the idea. Even after the script has been written, improvisation can still be used to develop ideas and to keep what’s good and discard what is bad. However, when playwrights allow performers to improvise, they have to be careful that the ideas are still clear and they flow from scene to scene. Much like directors, playwrights must still have the ultimate say in what is being put into the piece and what isn’t. Playwrights also get to experience their performer’s full potential when using improvisation which is also much like directors.
