How Is Race Socially Constructed
I strongly believe that race is a socially constructed and disagree with the theory that race is a natural phenomenon. Yes, different races have different physical features, but these physical differences have no affect on the actions, beliefs, thoughts, and etc. of a person. It all comes down to the mind and every person no matter what race they are born overall with the same biological make up of the brain. People can argue that this statement is false and that some races have smarter brains than others and they maybe right but the question is how did the brains of these smarter people come to be. It all comes down to social construction. For example, people may argue that white americans have a larger mental capacity than black americans and that this is a biological. I would not disagree but I would also argue that the only reason why these biological differences exhist is because of social construction. …show more content…
Since the very beginning of our nations time whites ruled supreme over blacks and handled everything that required the process of thought. Over the years these white people have bred and passed down their family trees the advances they made with their brains. Blacks were unable to receive education and were forced to perform physical labor, and people wonder why blacks dominate most of the sports in the United States and are on average much more physically powerful than whites. Personally I have noticed that almost all of my black friends have a lot more muscle naturally than any of my white friends. The blacks who were forced upon physical labor passed downed their physical genes like the whites passed down their mental genes, all due to social

There is a difference between race as socially constructed and race as biologically constructed. Understanding race as a social construct is critical to understanding the capacity of a given race to affect and intersect other domains and aspect of life and the society (Omi & Winant, 2014). A social construct is ontologically subjective in that the continued existence and construction of social constructs depends on social groups as well as their imposition, collective agreement, and acceptance of such constructions (Rutherford, 2017). Race is that regarded as socially constructed since it is ontologically subjective in that it is real in the society and shapes the way individuals see themselves and…

Early colonists wanted to keep Africans enslaved generation after generation in order to exploit a cheap source of labor, so European colonists justified the institution of race based slavery on the idea that physical characteristics like skin color are tied to intelligence and inherent superiority or inferiority (Smedley, 1997). For example, early anthropologists like Samuel Morton studied skulls sizes of different races and concluded that since Caucasians have larger skulls than others, Caucasians were the most intelligent and naturally superior (The Science of Race, 2016). Even today, many people are under the assumption that race is a distinct genetic or biological trait, when in fact there are no genetic markers that are indicative of race (Herbes-Sommers, 2003). This has led to the construction of racial categories in a hierarchy that effect one’s standing in a social and economic class (Ore,…

At the turn of the last century, WEB Dubois wrote, “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line, --the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea. Every study has come to the same conclusion that biologically, there are no 'races', yet the social construction of race as a category is alive and well today. The classification system, which radicalized different groups - typifying them according to their skin color and/or other defining features has a long history. With the advent of colonialism, racism underpinned the different and negative valuations attached to skin color. The racism of today is much more subtle and is no longer the blatant discrimination based on the color or your skin. It exists within the institutions of our society. It is the combination of government, corporate and media institutional racism that is largely responsible for the inequities of today. Unfortunately, these divisions impact the way in which we live our life and how we advance socially. Race has always been a complicated subject and is inevitable. Although we have made tremendous strides to dismantle the foundations of racism, it is clear and evident that racism still persists within the institutions of our society.…

    Race: Skin Deep?

According to the Webster’s New World College Dictionary, Race is defined as any of the different varieties or populations of human beings distinguished by a) physical traits such as hair, eyes, skin color, body shape, etc.: traditionally, the three primary divisions are Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid, and the many subdivisions are called races, b) blood types, c) genetic code patterns, d) all their inherited characteristics which are unique to their isolated breeding population. When someone hears the word ‘race’, they usually just think of the color of someone’s skin; but race is so much more than that. Your race defines not only what you look like but even some of your personalities. People tend to be drawn to people of the same race as them; for example Italians will hang out with Italians and Germans will hang out with Germans. Most people are drawn to people who are like themselves, which isn’t always a bad thing. It becomes a bad thing though, when you don’t come outside your comfort zone and met new people who are different from you. It is extremely important to expand your horizons and met new people.…

According to Michael P. Jeffries (http://genius.com/Michael-p-jeffries-paint-the-white-house-black-excerpt-annotated) ‘’Race” is rooted into a false beliefs with regards to the validity of observed physical differences as indicators of human capacity or behaviors. In order words, it is observed that human beings build categories and make their own naturally distinctions. He argued that, there is no biological classifications in racial categories and no relationship either, because it’s only based on observing of physical characteristics and behavior. However, humans do not have subspecies or races the way some animals do or any form of genetic traits, such as skin color, which is inherited separately from other physical and mental traits, hair features, blood type, eyes and so on. Therefore, with this said, one can say that race is socially constructed, which means that it is an ideal that is produced by human thoughts with an interaction rather than something that exist as material fact of life on earth.…

Many sociologists believe that race is a social construction. Social construction is defined in plain English as something that we the human race created on our own. When sociologists say that race is a social construction they obviously do not mean that we created the variance in physical features of many humans. What they mean is that we coined the term “race” and use it as a separator and an identifier of a large group of people. For example, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic these are race classes our society has created and defined. I believe the European explorers were the first constructors race. As explorers travel across the seas to new lands they became in contact with different humans whom had built a society much different than European society. These new societies…

Ian F. Haney Lopez, author of The Social Construction of Race, expresses race in its true lighting. It goes deeper than the color of one’s skin, color of one’s eyes, the shape of their features, and the sound coming off their lips. The freedom of people was all based upon “the characteristics of our hair, complexion, and facial features” and that they “still influence whether we are figuratively free or enslaved.” There is nothing false that Lopez says. He completely points out the false laws that the “white man” abides by and the others are subjected to. The structure of the article is very fluid in it chronologically backs itself up.…

When people try to define race, two common theories tend to develop. One theory is that race is biological. The second theory is that race is only a social construct. Both theories are correct. I believe that race is both. I also believe that race is such a complex concept that it can't be explained in this simple dichotomy.…

Race isn’t biological. It is in fact a social construct. People are categorized into race based on their appearance. Race has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with society. The article states how race is a social construct, which is true. Race is so powerful, that it possess life or death consequences. The idea of race today was not existent in ancient times, centuries ago. Many of the ancestors would use race to tell one person from the next, not discriminate in the way that we understand today. As Europeans began colonizing new land, race proved a good way in control and overthrow. The dominant group in society would define race in terms of biology. If you were a black person then you were biologically inferior to a white…

When sociologist say that race is a social construction they mean most racial issues are a result of how society perceives a certain race. Since humans are 99.9% percent identical when it comes to genes, you can say that we are all similar. However, a lot of people focus on the differences between other races. All over America lately, you have seen people being discriminated against and feel that they are treated unfairly just because of their race. A person's race does not define who they are as a person. Of course a person's race may have something to do with how a person is raised but it definitely doesn't define who they are. If you have been watching the news in the last couple of years you will have seen many incidents where a person's race has led to a…

The social construction of race is a perspective that in which society creates racial categories. This goes past the biological aspects because we are all the same in terms of biologically. Each different kinds of culture and society characterizes each race differently. It could be skin color, the way a certain type of race talks, eye color, hair color, etc. A symbolic interactionist would view at the different synergies between individuals of different races. They would try to see how these individuals would act according to skin color, language, etc. The concept of social construction of race can be applied in terms of multiple identities. Americans, such as Tiger Woods and Barack Obama, come from multiple racial backgrounds and are breaking barriers and creating new racial categories. This shows that races are becoming very…

By watching the film I have a deep understanding, I know racial distinction is not just by appearance, we don't really know what is race, actually the race is not important, but the race is still bringing great influence on people's lives. This film is about race, not about attitude and behavior of the individual, and in the past in the history of the institutional and policy in the United States is still on the basis of race, through sacrifice others bring interests for groups. The biggest benefit is the white, white we see at the time of life is so happy, but not because of their hard work, but because of their laws, courts, customs, even if the housing is a race.…

When first learning about the term Race it was hard to pin point the actual definition of race in my own terms. We had several readings, all which played a vital role in me; further understanding race and what factors it plays in our society today. In the article Sports in Society by Jay Coakley, Coakley defines race as, “a population of people who are believed to be naturally or biologically distinct from other populations…”…

Because of this, it is hard for scientists to prove their point and state that Black or Kenyan runners do have some form of superiorness instead they sequester the proof. “Racial Politics can make the genetics of African Athleticism difficult to talk about in the west”(Fisher 2). Taking this proof as some form of racism can cause many scientists to lose their jobs and be consider racists, however scientists still strive to find what other aspects give kenyans there advantage.“ To many Sociologists, the answer is racism. What really is being said is kind of underway. Blacks are closer to beasts and animals in terms of their genetic and physical and anatomical makeup….”(Entine 1). What is being said can be taken in and thought of as either good or bad. When scientist find proof that black athletes are genetically gifted runners, this could be a good thing but only if people are mature and not skeptical about the truth that based on science, genetic mutations happen and cannot be stopped. On the otherhand, it could have negative effects on all runners knowing that black athletes do have the advantage when it comes to track and competing won’t be as fair or as fun to watch. In the past people believe that changes made in genetics did not affect the color of our skin(Entine 1).…

I live in Champaign, Illinois where the current population is 81,055 (as reported in 2010 in the U.S. Census). Our town has a variety of different people of different races and who may look alike, and also look very different from one another. I am African American, and there are a lot of other women in this town who are of the same race and have the same skin complexion. I have also been told plenty of times I look like someone else, and have even been mistaken for someone else. Since moving here in 1999, I have saw and went to school, and also worked with other African Americans, Asians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Caucasians. I can honestly say a lot of the other races including Mexicans and Asians have a lot of the same characteristics so they do seem to favor a lot.…
