Race and Your Community
I live in Champaign, Illinois where the current population is 81,055 (as reported in 2010 in the U.S. Census). Our town has a variety of different people of different races and who may look alike, and also look very different from one another. I am African American, and there are a lot of other women in this town who are of the same race and have the same skin complexion. I have also been told plenty of times I look like someone else, and have even been mistaken for someone else. Since moving here in 1999, I have saw and went to school, and also worked with other African Americans, Asians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Caucasians. I can honestly say a lot of the other races including Mexicans and Asians have a lot of the same characteristics so they do seem to favor a lot.
The leaders in our community, like the major, I have never met so I’m not sure how they treat others but I would think fair enough to have been elected to make big decisions over the town and the residents here. Another leader I have heard about was the president of the Boys and Girls club located in Champaign, IL. He was said to have been a part in a lot of community projects to better the town and the children of the town. The Boys and Girls Club is located in a lower class neighborhood and the majority of the children that attend the club are of African American decent but all races are welcome. One leader in our community that a lot of people have had a lot of disagreements with is the Chief of Police for Champaign County. In the past few years, there have been several reports on discrimination against African American teens from the Champaign Police Officers (Department). Sad to say, but a 15 year old African American was shot and killed by an officer who thought he had a gun. This brought on several hearings, protest, and community meetings but the officer was still given a “slap on the wrist.” Overall when I look back on the years I have lived
