With the introduction of face book and other social media sites, nurses are facing new challenges in professionalism. Professionalism in nursing is behavior that represents the nursing profession in a manner that promotes patient confidence and a flourishing employment atmosphere. (Hood, 2016, p. 13) Professional conduct must continue even outside of the nurse’s work place to prevent harm to patients and lose of integrity to the nursing profession.

Social media has become a great way to communicate information but as a professional you are held at a higher standard. Employers do not want to hire a nurse to care for critically ill patients that posts picture of herself on face book saying how she doesn’t like working
If a nurse takes a picture in the bathroom while at work and post’s it with a comment, “this is me working, haha”. Seems like it’s not really a violation of patient privacy but what if I told you the nurse worked in home health and she took a picture of her nails she just finished painting? Because the picture was taken in a patient’s home and their bathroom it is clearly a violation of privacy even though the patient is not in the picture and even though no personal information was in the post, there is still the risk that someone would recognize the home and then be able to identify the patient. There is also the fact that nurses are professionals and need to model behavior that promotes trust, intelligence, and high moral values. I would not want a nurse taking care of me or my child that painter her
