Several states had tried to pass labor laws only to be rejected by the Supreme Court due to conflicts with other states. Progressives pushed Congress to pass labor laws that reduced the number of hours people could work and in most states forbid children under the age of 16 to work in mines or factories. Progressives also pushed to keep citizens safe from substandard food and medicines by giving a government agency the authority to inspect drugs, meat and other foods.
We can also thank Progressives for income tax. The poor didn’t have to pay as much as the wealthy based on income. Progressives were also successful in adding the 17th Amendment to the Constitution. Until 1913, senators were elected by small groups of people in each state and did not represent majority of voters. The 17th Amendment required US senators to be elected directly by the people of the states.
Progressives officially supported women's right to vote and their work paid off in 1920 when congress passed the 19th amendment and it became part of the
