Why Were The Progressives Successful

The Progressives are people that believe that problems should be solved by providing education, organized workplace and a safe environment. The progressives tried to encourage Americans to understand what democracy meant. Jacob Riis, Ida Tarbell and Jane Addams were also progressives. “They concentrated on exposing the evils of corporate greed, combating fear of immigrants,”. Progressivism became a political movement in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. They became successful socially, politically, and industrially.

How successful were the Progressives Socially - The Progressives was very successful socially. They were successful because they had Muckrakers to help them. Muckrakers are reporters that exposes issues in the government and other
problems. Publications like Ida Tarbell exposed things like child labor, industrial incidents in the steel industry, the unjust treatment of Southern blacks and etc. A muckraker name Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. It explains how the meat that they eat is spoiled and covered with chemicals. "These rats were nuisances, and the packers would put poisoned bread out for them: they would die, and then rats, bread, and meat would go into the hoppers together. This is no fairy story and no joke…there were things that went into the sausage in comparison with which a poisoned rat was a tidbit." Congress then passed the Pure Food And Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act so there would be anymore spoiled meat.
