Hook: Imagine what it would be like without our freedom and equality imagine living in a nation that treated everyone differently depending on how they looked or what they believed well that was the normal back when there was no freedom and even less equality when our nation began a battle for both those to be effective on every man and women born into this nation. The Civil War was a time that changed the views of a lot of Americans and how they saw freedom and equality. Back in the year 1861 on the 12th of April a great war began between the states. They called it the Civil War. This War lasted a long gruesome 4 years from 1861 to 1865. It finally ended with the agreement that they were going to free the slaves but still some did not. For example in the speech the Gettysburg Address it states, “ ...a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…” (Lincoln, 1).
