New technology, such as improvements to the railroad, made it easy to get raw materials to the cities and get finished products to other markets. Overland mail used to take 180 days, but with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, the time was cut down to only 7 days. After this, the telegram made communication almost instant by using a system of dots and dashes called Morse code. The telephone then improved on this by allowing
communication of voices.
The manufacturing process also changed. Companies started making interchangeable parts, instead of creating each one individually. They also starting mass producing. This means that they used new machinery and unskilled workers, which replaced most of the time consuming work of the skilled workers. This made the prices of goods drop, because skilled workers no longer labored for days over a single item. Because of this price drop, more people were able to but these goods.
The Second Industrial Revolution included huge changes in the way that goods were made. It also gave us technology like the telephone that is still a part of everyday lives today, as well as processes to keep production costs and therefore prices low. Thanks to the Second Industrial Revolution, more jobs were created which boosted America's population with new immigrants, and made the America many people enjoy today.
