In the article, "When Mosquitoes Were Killers In America" written by Lauren Tarshis, the author states that mosquitoes are far worse than being a nuisance. There are many places in the article that back this statement. For example, the author writes something about how mosquitoes can easily spread a deadly disease called malaria. "In this way, bite by itchy bite, 212 million people are infected with malaria each year. Many live in crowded areas where mosquitoes easily spread the disease from person to person"(Tarshis 13). This is saying that in a small area, mosquitoes can easily infect people with a deadly disease. This is important because it shows an example of a piece of evidence to back up Lauren's statement. Plus, it shows how mosquitoes…

One of the main ethical concerns of the Zika virus has to do with the people. Of the articles I read, the ethical concerns have to do with religious beliefs and honesty of the general public involved. Since many of the health care professionals recommend mothers to be on a steady form of birth control if they are planning to travel anywhere that will have a chance of catching the Zika virus, it conflicts with some people’s beliefs. For example, a woman going on birth control is directly against the Catholic Church belief. This raises ethical concerns amongst a large portion of the population since so many people are Catholic in the world. Another point that raises ethical concern is the honesty of the public. As an example, if someone is asked…

Malaria in Tanzania effects it’s country economically, socially and environmentally, but by taking the right steps, Malaria can be cured. Malaria is a widespread disease in Africa that is transmitted by the bite of a female mosquito. Malaria impacts a human physically, mentally and emotionally. Symptoms include a headache, fever, fatigue, dry cough, spleen enlargement and continuous vomiting. In Tanzania, approximately 93.7 out of 1000 people die of Malaria each year. NCBI.com states “There are 14-18 million cases of Malaria each year in Tanzania.”3 90% of the population is at risk. Therefore only 10% of the population is safe, but since the cases reported each year are increasing, that 10% will become a part of that 90% meaning the entire population of Tanzania can be affected by Malaria. This disease results in missed school and work days, and an overall loss of productivity. More importantly, the disease causes a negative economic impact, costing Tanzania 240$ million dollars per year.…

Chapter 14 talks about the immune system and how it protects us from dangerous invaders. Immunizing agents and allergenic extracts are biologics. They are chemical agents that produce biological responses inside the body. Vaccinations are highly effective compared to other drugs, the history of smallpox can prove of it. When a microorganism enters the body, lymphocytes are activated to provide antibodies. Lymphocytes attempts to resist infection by invading the pathogens with physical and chemical attacks. Immunity is the ability to infection through activation of specific defenses. The blood contains T cells, B cells and natural killer cells to directly attack invaders, attack infected cells and release antibodies. There is active immunity…
