The narrator uses similes, metaphor and imagery to describe Devon. This gives us a much better understanding of the narrator’s memories that he had in Devon school. For example the narrator says “I didn’t entirely like this new glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a museum,(1)”. In this the narrator uses a simile in which he says the glossy surface makes his school appear as a museum. Another example of the narrator using figure of speech to describe Devon is when he says “ It had loomed in my memory as a huge lone spike dominating the river bank forbidding as an artillery piece”(13). In this instance the narrator simile to describe the tree he thought he was looking for by calling it a forbidding piece of artillery. This means that the Narrator had a crucial connection with that tree.…

First, determine where you stand in the social pyramid. Obviously you are not at the top, so at least get an idea of how close or far off the ladder you are climbing towards. In a jungle, are you nearly a tiger or a little worm avoiding being stepped by monkeys? If you are known for being in the group that still safety-pins their tighty-whities to their pants, then you probably have to work a little harder. Now that you have an idea of where you are, you know how much effort you have to put in to reach your goal. Not only should you determine where you are in the social pyramid, you should look around and be aware of your surroundings. Know where certain ‘types’ of people are on the social ladder. Understand who is known for what and why they are seen this way. Once you have an accurate feel and judgment in knowing where others stand in the social pyramid, really look and study the behaviors and attitudes of those that are at the top. Take note of those that radiate ‘cool.’…
What this means to say is that when a group of people are put together and one opinion is shared that seems okay then everyone in that group will jump on it and run with it. They will take that to mean that it is also their opinion without them having thought of it. So each person will not have formed their own opinion. They will just take what the other people say and think that it is right while not having their own opinion on why that…

Growing through the journey of life and developing one’s unique personality can only come from the person’s own self growth. In order to find yourself you must look within yourself and see what you really are about. Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed in his writing, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind” (pg. 3). Knowing about it and acknowledging the subject isn’t the same as actual individual experience. Knowing it first hand from your own perspective, makes you believe in the subject more than you would if it were just to be a general opinion from another voice. In other cases, one must push oneself to actually experience and know what there is to learn. It can be really simple for some but it can be a struggle for others because not everyone has the capability to do so, depending on their…
The first goal I improved on was my critical thinking skills. In my CIP paper, I talked about how understanding the facts are simple, but being able to interpret the importance of each fact is very key when creating a speech. I wanted to understand the grey areas in my own communicating to help me convey my message and understand the grey areas in others communicating skills to give better feedback. By listening to myself practice speeches and listen to others giving their speeches helped me to think more about the message that is being sent. This also connects to one of my other goals, which was to improve my research skills. A crucial part in finding the right information is knowing how to research and how to analyze your sources using your critical thinking skills to interpret the author’s message. I saw my improvement in this area by looking at my speech materials from my informative speech. By bettering my skills in these two areas I was able to build upon them to create a stronger foundation for my other goals.…
In conclusion, conformity is all around as and there is not a true way to get out of it. Although there is the thought that by going against others opinions it is being a nonconformist, this is incorrect. If you have an opinion someone else in this large world is bound to have the same one, this causes another group. There isn't a specific group that everyone branches off from which causes there to be no group to stick out from. Nonconformity is conforming because you will never be the only one with a certain…
