How to Encourage Your Reticent Students to Participate More Active in Classroom?
Reticent students, or passive students are they who lack of participation in classroom’s lessons or activity. Usually, this type of students tend to avoid from participating or joining any activities that has been conducted by the teachers. This students may have the problems of low self-esteem, unconfident in sharing ideas, shy, and others, As teachers, we should be able to recognize this type of students in class as they may need serious attention for they should not be left out from the lesson. One of the ways to make sure that they participate is by giving encouragement to them. First of all, teachers should tell all the students clearly of what you are expecting from the students; for example, we must make it clear that all students need to participate in every lessons or activities that has been conducted by the teacher. With that, this will trigger the passive students that they have to be prepared as they need to contribute to the lesson. Secondly, teachers should use variety of teaching methods; for instance, in this case, instead of asking them to be in a big group, they should be put in a smaller group (still in grouping). Usually, when they are in a big group, they might be overshadowed by the active students. So instead, put them in a smaller group as it will give chances for the passive students to contribute to the lesson. Next, when they are in the group, ask them to discus each other to come out with ideas, questions, debates or anything. Then, ask the passive students to present on what they have discussed in the group. In addition, the teacher could also ask the quiet students to answer the questions or give ideas about the issues. Moreover, when the teacher give questions to the students, make sure that the teacher give ample of time for the students to think about the answers. After that, comment their answers in a way that combines encouragements and intellectual challenge. This will show that the teacher does take their answers

    Before any teaching session begins I would establish some ground rules with each new group of learners. I would explain the reasons for having these and promote discussion about what I expect from them as learners and what they can expect from me as tutor. I would most likely opt for a flip chart to write these down and use this activity to encourage participation by asking the group what they feel is important to them in terms of respect for each others individuality and what they feel is acceptable behaviour, this could include learners writing the groups ideas onto the flip chart or writing their ideas down, collating them and selecting the most appropriate and relevant ones which would then form the basis of an agreement. Examples of ground rules being respecting for each other, turning mobile phones to silent, not interrupting each other and allowing opinions to be expressed, do we allow swearing and if so at what level do we draw the line. Having established these ground rules I would suggest to the group that I draw up an agreement in the form of a list that we all adhere to and can refer to. I would also agree with the group the consequences of infringement of the agreement, this may be in 3 stages, 1 being polite reminder of our agreement, 2 being a discussion in private between myself and the learner and 3 if the infringement continued the learner would be asked to leave the course.
