An African American male named Joshua Beal was shot by an off duty officer in November of last year on the Southside of Chicago. Beal was a part of a funeral procession and was stopped in front of a firehouse because he was blocking the fire lane. The stop led to an altercation and Beal was approached by an off duty firefighter, an off duty policeman and a third policeman.The altercation started to heat up when a police officer pulled out his gun and started firing shots. Additionally, there are hopes of ending it altogether. One example of how to do this is have officers trained in racial bias. It has been found that officers will decide what to do based on their own stereotypical thoughts about a certain race. For example, a white police officer might shoot a black suspect because he believes all black people are criminals. Officers in California started to listen to the suspects instead of just acting on their bias that they have towards them because of what race they are. They heard them out and listened to the full story before they acted. This reduced compliance issues and increased cooperation from the suspect
