INTRODUCTION
Volleyball was conceived by Williams J. Morgan of the Holyoke, Massachusetts YMCA in 1895 as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Early rules called for a net 6 feet 6 inches from the ground and for a 25-by 50-foot court, and provided for the game to be played in innings, by any number of players on a side. Two teams from the Holyoke YMCA demonstrated the game at a conference of YMCA physical directors, and the sport quickly developed under their supervision. Rule changes have been made gradually and consistently since 1900, resulting in the present rules. Today, volleyball has spread to 211 countries around the world, and is recognized as a truly international, widely played, popular sport. In 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was founded by Leonanrd Armato. The organization started its own beach volleyball tour in the United States in 1984. In 1986, The Women’s Professional Association (WPVA) was formed to administer, govern, and protect the integrity of Women’s Professional Beach Volleyball. In 1996, for the first time in the history of volleyball, beach doubles volleyball is included in the Olympic Games.
The problem for many athletes is that regardless of whether there is a correlation or not, many coaches and athletes believe that weight loss is directly correlated to improved performances. Looking to standardized weight charts is not helpful when dealing with the health and proper weight of an athlete. Because muscles mass weighs more than fat mass, female athletes tend to weigh in at the top ranges for their height when being weighed on a scale. Athletes may mistake their weight as too high based on standardized weight charts. Because weight charts are not a reliable and/or accurate source for determining an athlete’s healthy weight sports medicine professionals may opt for measuring the athlete’s body fat percentage. Body fat is a component of overall body composition. The
