to protect their homes and families. Depending on the city you live in, the time it takes for an officer to respond to a call can vary. Densely populated cities like New York may take nine minutes, but if you live in a rural or suburban area, where crime rates can be higher, it can take up to an hour for a first responder to get there. Why wait to call a person with a gun, when you can be that person? To fire off of self defense, my second point covers how guns used in crimes and murders are purchased. In 2004, the government conducted its periodic Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities. It found that among inmates who had a gun when they committed their crime, only 11% had legally bought the firearm at a retail store, a pawn shop, a flea market or a gun show. Another 37% had gotten it from a friend or family member. About 52% said they got it illegally on the black market, from a drug dealer or by stealing it. With these statistics, how would banning legal guns decrease crime on a national level? My last point is America was built on the second amendment. The second amendment gives us citizens the right to own ordinary weapons. If most guns are bought on the black market, how will restricting guns you can buy decrease murder? The second amendment states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The whole reason our country is a country is because of a group of rebels with guns. We rebelled against Britain by force with guns. In fact, Thomas Jefferson could not stress this enough. "What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." - Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to James Madison, December 20, 1787. He goes on to state this in the Constitution and made 19 more quotes just like this. Not only did Thomas Jefferson speak about guns, so did other founding fathers like George Washington, Ben Franklin, George Mason, James Madison, Richard Lee, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and many more. Some might say that gun control reduces deaths.
This is not true. Dr. Bindu Kalesan, Olivia Keiser, and Jeffrey A. Fagan, who have PHD’s (Doctorate of Philosophy) and Sandro Galea and Matthew E. Mobily, who have MD’s (Doctor of Medicine) conducted a study to see the correlation between passing gun control laws, and the amount of gun related deaths every year. They found that the importance of focusing on relevant and effective firearms legislation is not correlated with less deaths and very few of the existing state-specific firearm laws are associated with reduced firearm mortality. They do however note that background checks of ammunition and guns could reduce deaths by up to 90%. Nothing would be wrong with doing background checks. If you are a law abiding citizen, you have nothing to worry about. Gun’s should be used for defending our rights and the constitution, or sporting activities like hunting and target shooting. The gun is only as powerful as what the person is doing with
it. Gun control should not be enacted because it takes away a sense of security, most guns used in a crime are bought illegally, and america was built on the second amendment. I suggest you realize the benefits of owning a gun before you decide that they should be restricted.
