I believe that implementing strategies to promote, maintain, and restore health is key to the nursing career; the main goal of nursing is to improve an individual’s health. In my clinical experience, it’s to maintain the individual’s health issues or diseases. An example of using teaching/learning principles is when taking a resident’s blood glucose a family member asked me what the normal range for blood glucose is. I explained that a blood glucose level between 70-100mg/dL is desired. Then I went on to explain that based of the resident’s blood glucose levels a certain amount of insulin will be administered. Nursing is a very challenging and interesting career which involves hard work and commitment. Since I started studying Health and Social Care, my interest in Nursing has grown. This has inspired me to study Child Nursing as I believe that my studies can be practically applied. I am also keen to make a difference to people’s lives, whether caring for children or supporting parents. On the self-assessment inventory, I scored between 76 and 88 out of 100 on each key competency except for the Change and Across Cultures competencies. My scores were within the numerical range for 68% of managerial professionals that completed this self-evaluation. For the most part, I see myself as very good on a number of the skills such as balancing my personal and work life, embracing uniqueness, supporting the goals of a team, and making ethical business decisions. For the Across Cultures competency, I am lacking in global experience and the skills to recognize the differences of various cultures and customs. I believe one of the hardest aspects of being a nurse is having to deal with a patient’s death, especially if it’s unexpected, and you have grown close to them. Although I am not a nurse, I do know the pain of losing someone dear to me, just as every individual does. As a new nurse, of course, it would be difficult to handle a sudden and bloody patient death. As of right now I don’t know how I would handle it because I have not had to face such a situation. As a reluctant and nervous nineteen-year-old, I walked in to my first day as a nurse aid to a brightly lit, and mostly bubble gum pink Women’s Service’s unit. I worked there through nursing school; and happily accepted a job as a nurse after graduating. Nine years, and a lot of joy, tears, and learning in between, I continue to call this place my home. There is much satisfaction in being part of the continuum of care of women and families during the antepartum, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period, as well as the care of her newborn baby, and for some women, before and after gynecological surgeries. At the beginning of the term I reflected on my successes and downfalls from the previous term and developed goals. My first goal was to complete the assessment portion of patient care in one appointment by the end of the term. I was able to accomplish this goal right away, and with almost every patient I saw, which I am proud of. My second goal was to accurately chart restorations, using detailed surfaces, and other dental appliances. Again, I was able to achieve this goal and as a result became much better at dental charting. My final goal was to detect and remove calculus at 75% accuracy, which I was also able to accomplish by the end of the term.…
