Why I appreciate America’s Veterans In 1918, President Wilson established November 11 as a day to show honor and thankfulness for those who have risked their lives for our country. This day was significant because it was "The War to end all Wars,” World War I. This day was mainly set aside to show pride to our veterans of World War I. In 1938, Armistice Day, Veterans Day original name, became a legal holiday. In 1945 just after World War II ended, congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day was created to show pride to American Veterans of every war, with the oddity of a few years in which it was celebrated every year on a Monday, November 11th. Today, almost a hundred years later, Veterans Day is set aside
so we, as a country, can celebrate and admire all our veterans for their devotion, and there love for our country and desire to serve and maybe even die for the common good. Many have served and died since before the Revolution and to this very day many more will continue to do the same. For this, I am thankful. For this we will be forever grateful. We should not have to set aside a day to show appreciation to our veterans or to be thankful for those who fought so we could live in this amazing country with all this freedom, but we should take that day, along with every other day, to show our gratefulness. We should always show respect to our veterans. If not for them, we might not have all this freedom. However, we must do more than put on a show for one day, one celebration, one parade, or even one special event. We should carry honor of our veterans with us each day. We should show our appreciation in the manner that we live our lives and the message we give the younger kids. It’s our job to teach each generation, even mine, of the sacrifice made in order for us to live freely. Freedom should never be taken for granted. I am thankful for all those who have paid the price to give me that right. I am blessed that our freedom is such that it can be taken for granted. However, it is also a blessing to be able to appreciate those who paid for our freedom.
