National WWII Memorial

America’s second world war is conserved by the memorial in Washington D.C. It contains the memories and facts about this event in history, that honors the sixteen million who died in the armed forces, 400,000 who died in the war, and millions of Americans who supported the American war effort at home (National WWII Memorial). Adolf Hitler used his position as chancellor to be a dictator. He had full control over the legislative and executive branches. He took control in 1933 and started World War II in 1939, by attacking Poland. World War II started in Europe, but eventually did spread throughout the world, involving more then thirty countries. There is two 43-foot arches, which represent the Atlantic and Pacific sides in the war. The Atlantic and Pacific sides are two operations fought on opposite sides of the world at this time. There is a wall with 4,000 gold stars, each star representing 100 U.S. deaths in the war. The 56 pillars stand for the amount of states and territories of the District of Columbia that the time period World War II was in. There are two bronze and granite wreaths standing on each pillar, one on each side. There was also different types of wreaths. The wheat wreath represents agriculture and the oak wreath represents industry (Frequently asked Questions). The pillars are connected with a bronzed rope that is to symbolize the country’s effort and commitment in the war (Murry). There are quotations on the walls from famous political and military leaders, like General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was later president, Franklin D. The National World War II Reunion is held over four days, May 27-30. May 8th the allies accepted the surrender of Germany, which ended the war. V-E is celebrated on May 8th and is celebrated because of the Allies Forces Victory in Europe during World War II. Veterans Day is on November 11th to honors those who served in the US Armed Forces.
