How Was The Mexican War Justified

For many years Americans across the country believed in manifest destiny. This is the belief that God wanted Americans to expand the United States to the Pacific Ocean. In addition, they were also pro-slavery. In spite of their ideals, there was one entity stopping them from fulfilling and continuing their beliefs ; Mexico. Although Mexico was precluding their aspirations, it didn’t give the United States the right to go to war. Going to war with Mexico was not justifiable for multiple reasons. First, and foremost, the primary reason war was not justified, nor warranted, is because the Americans were on Mexican land that they were originally invited to inhabit. Once Mexico was declared free from Spain in 1821, the Mexican leaders noticed the vacancy of their northern lands. Their strategy to increase the population was to coax American farmers to settle in the Mexican province of Texas. Given that they were invited to share a piece of land, it seems immoral for the Americans to then forcefully take that land by means of war.
The Mexican’s primary custom was that there be no slavery since they were Catholics. This equated anti-slavery. Most of the American settlers were Protestants and pro slavery. This meant that they brought and kept their slaves on the Mexican land, thus breaking that single rule.
