Human Trafficking; The United States Public’s Opinion

Abstract
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, human trafficking is defined as “the acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them.” This includes, servitude, forced labor, sex, and forced organ donations. It is estimated that the disturbing activity brings in $32 Billion dollars a years. As of this writing it is not far behind drug trafficking as the largest criminal industry in the world. These films outnumber features on smuggling or sweatshops. However, nearly all of the trafficking films involve Euro-American victims who have been coerced (not deceived) and are minors. This results in opinion marker individuals, such as American college students, to be much more familiar with human trafficking than any other type of human rights abuse with the exception of genocide (Brysk, 2009). Yet, there is a misconception that America does not have a trafficking problem. This misconception contributes to the expansion of human trafficking and to prolonging the problem impacting society and harming persons who are unfamiliar with trafficking and its social ramifications (Weaver, …show more content…
