The meaning of "hunger" depends on the location of the person and the situation they are in. To an American citizen hunger means not being able to have food inserted into their body for a couple of hours, or when their stomach starts developing a stomach ache, which to them is the definition of "hunger". going several days without a single food in their body, while being afflicted with the discomfort of stomach growling and stomach aching for not just hours, but days. The body is design for craving food, that how the body has the fuel to function properly, so it is natural to ask "where will we go eat?" or "what will we eat?" as we open the cabinets and pantry in the kitchen, but for others such as the kids and adults in Ethiopia who are starving will ask one question and that is "when will we able to eat?" According to World Food Programme (WFP) "Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined" Ethiopians on daily basis have to fight hunger, however they never seem to win the battle. An average male needs at least 2,500 calories in order to keep his weight stable, yet 800,000 people in Ethiopia are struggling to even get a meal into their body. (worldfoodprize.org)
Hunger has come to be the ultimate death for Ethiopian people, it has come to the point where hunger has controlled all of their body including their minds. With a population of 98 millions, 20% of the population are struggling to find something to eat while, 40% of the population of kids under the age of 5 are suffering from stunting, caused by malnutrition. (feed the future) Research from "irinnews" shows that in Eastern Ethiopia the average rainfall per year goes as low as 250 millimeter, while the average temperature rises as high a 86°. Without the rain the vegetables and fruits will not be able to grow thus causing the people of Ethiopia to struggle to gain money for food. With the lack of rain decrease the amount of harvestable crops forcing the people to starve, a Ethiopian woman told CNN that "We've already been forced to eat our maize seed. Those seeds were our future. There's nothing to harvest". (CNN)
There are many elements that contributes that cause hunger to become of one of those most deadly concerns in Ethiopia.
Hunger is the number one threat to the people of Ethiopian, it is the main thing that threatens the lives of the people currently living there (WFP). Famine was the cause of the hunger in Ethiopia. "Worldinfo.org" stated that famine in 2003, caused the one-fifth of the population to go without food, and tens of thousands to died from the lack of food and malnutrition. Ethiopia is a country that depends on agriculture as their way of making money, 60% of water rainfall is needed in order for the region to have constant agricultural
growth.
Americans do not understand the true meaning of hunger, yes there are people in America that are dealing with food problems, in fact in 2013, quoted from "Worldhunger.org" "14.3% households were food insecure". That doesn't mean America is a country that is in starvation, According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United States (FAO), 40% of food supplies is wasted that equals up to 20 pounds person, per month. Also from FAO, consumers in rich countries such as America waste as much food (222 millions) as the entire food net production of Sub-Saharan Africa (230 millions). If America was in hunger 222 millions of those wasted food would go towards their stomach, and not the trash can.
