Under the presidency of S.A.D.D (Students Against Destructive Decisions) in my high school, I've conducted and lead many projects to help many organizations and even planned and coordinated many community service projects. But, out of the many project that the club and I have planned and created, I would have to state that I've projected my leadership role the most while our club and I went to Feeding South Florida for a field trip that I've planned. The reason why I state this is because, Feeding South Florida was a common place that many people knew, especially our members, and so before we got to the warehouse, I've explained the purpose Feeding South Florida stands for and the job that we would have to do there. When we got to the warehouse and began working, I would help the members and other volunteers carry boxes that were a bit heavy for them to carry and to help them understand how to sort the items that were donated to the warehouse into categorized boxes that they had provided to us. The purpose on why I led this project is because of the purpose behind Feeding South Florida, which is to collect, pack and send foods to the many shelters and food kitchens that they have provided in South Florida and working on this project created a positive effect on my life. The reason why I state this is because, while volunteering, it made me feel as if I was privileged.…

According to Merriam-Webster, a feedlot is defined as a plot of land on which livestock are fattened for market. Feedlots have vastly taken over America in the past few years. “Almost all beef found in grocery stores come from cattle fattened up in large grain feeding operations” (Robbins video). John Robbins describes these feedlots in the film clip Diet for a New America (meat consumption). The point of this essay is to explore the negative and positive arguments made by John Robbins in the film clip Diet for a New America (meat consumption). Throughout the video it describes how bad feedlots are. They are unsanitary, overcrowded, and inhumane. They are also contaminating the nearby water sources. Manure is going into the ground contaminating the water in ways that can be destructive. Fertilizer is also getting into the water as well.…

First, I would like to give my opinion of whether this book was worthwhile at the beginning of this book review. Because I believe this is one of the most moving books written today about the problem of hunger in America. I also believe that this book should be required reading for every "elected official" who has the power to end the needless tragedy of hunger in America. This is a very well-written, well-researched book based on real people with real stories not just about numbers, trends, stats, or theories.…

According to World Bank, food prices have risen by 83% in just 3 years and will likely continue to rise. With the rising food cost and the fallen economy it is a no brainer as to why we have 49.1 million people living in food insecure homes. American’s would not be starving if the government lowered the IRT, accepted more funding, denied aid to illegal immigrants, who are not working and started to inform more citizens of the food stamp program.…

Robert Kenner’s documentary, Food Inc., gives insight into operations in the food industry. The documentary depicts the people’s desire for money, with resultant implications characterized by mass production through varying approaches. Indeed, Kenner seeks to sensitize the society on the manner in which animals are exposed to inhumane conditions, severe health conditions that result from mass production in the food industry, and unmoral circumstances under which farmers operate. Whereas various flaws are depicted in the movie, it remains important in relation to societal operations and development. This positional essay provides a critique of Robert…

The preventable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and renal failure have become an epidemic in our society. It seems like most of every one we know has either one of above mentioned diseases. Back in the days not everyone was able to afford good quality food, so whatever they ate they ate in moderation, on the other hand now food is more affordable, due to cheap imports from other countries. People have made up a mentality that if less food is good then more should be better, which is not always true. Most of this health care crisis is due to lack of public health education. As health care professionals we know that poor nutrition is responsible for the majority of preventable diseases, while general public has no idea about what goes on in their bodies and what is the importance of proper nutrition. First point which I am going to include in a public nutrition program is Heart disease. Heart disease is responsible for 600,000 deaths in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease alone cost the United States $108.9 million each year, total cost includes, cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity. Heart disease is preventable, if the individual just stops smoking, eats low sodium, low cholesterol, and low fat diet and exercises routinely. The second point is going to be Obesity. Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Lack of education, irresponsible eating habits and poor selections of foods are responsible for this preventable disease. Third point will be to put more emphasis on consuming foods which could contribute to improving the quality of life and the feeling of well being. These foods are green vegetables and fruits. These food items are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Our body needs these substances…

Hunger is the feeling of discomfort or debility caused by lack of food, combined with the aspiration to eat. Hunger has always been a conflict that has shadowed humanity ever since the stone age and it still preserves to be the basic struggle of humanity. Although the hunger outbreak has decreased within the decades and centuries it is yet to be entirely abolished. Hunger has decreased through methods such as agriculture, extensive food production and charities. However all of these methods do not thoroughly annihilate the concept of hunger. The reasons people are still going hungry in the United States of America are because people proceed to be malnourished due to lack of food, lack of Government involvement and low household incomes.…

It is often said that, “You are what you eat,” food is an essential provision that cannot be taken for granted. The access for food is crucial and the food people put in their body is significant. Food determines various aspect of the human body such as, body shape, production of energy and ultimately overall health. The American lifestyle is based on time, speed and efficiency; therefore the American people tend to be oblivious on what they put inside their body. Society in America, particularly poor people, are forced to live in an environment where food leads to obesity or health problems, and the rich gain more access on fresh, healthy diet with low fat and salt. American’s perspective on time has dramatically transformed the way they eat and how they eat food. Instead of viewing food as a substance to be delight in, the appreciation for food has deteriorated, in other words, food has become a “means” to an end. Food is the ultimate hot-button issue because everyone eats it and no one wants to feel guilty about what they’re eating. Food can be as sensitive a subject as religion or politics. Ultimately, as the passion and eagerness for food in America increases, it becomes difficult to bridge the gap of feeding America with healthy nutritious diet.…

In order to pursue your self-interest, relying on oneself means to be independent and responsible in order to achieve your goals. individuals that possess confidence and have faith in their beliefs are more prone to be independent. Self reliance is important because that person is capable of standing up on their own feet without depending on others or yearning to be like them. The French Revolution has taught the French people at that time to be self reliant and not depend on the King because all the leaders in France were constantly being executed. However, in order to be self reliant one must be responsible for their own actions. As previously mentioned, people with individualistic ideologies don't depend on others so responsibility is the key to being self reliant. Another example of self reliance is economic freedom. Economic freedom is where consumers and producers have the free will in choosing in what to buy and sell. Economic freedom gives individuals the power in choosing what to invest in responsibly and independently without having to depend on others.…
