Hunting of Tuko
These past few weeks I keep hearing about TUKO or Tokay gecko in our place. My aunts, uncles, neighbors and even my father were so anxious of finding one. Well..I thought they were being crazy. Dah!!..How come they would want such weird looking lizard?!

Well..Here’s the catch! This Tuko hunting thing is not as peculiar as I thought..well because practically several places here in our country where actually hunting tuko for years now. Huh! How really weird I thought! Well..on the other hand..I’m maybe the weird here..

I was so intrigued with this issue that it forces me to have my own researched about this stuff hoping I could toned down their interest about these tukos. Well here’s the catch again. I bet after reading what I had found out you would go and searched your mountains and coconut trees hoping to also catch even just one tuko. Because pals…This lizard is for SALE! Accordingly, each marketable size of this (around 300g-400g and above) would give you a dazzling P100, 000/100g (it actually depends on its size)!!

You may wonder why it’s so expensive..well here’s why..Tuko or Tokay Gecko is a reptile..well a nocturnal arboreal geckoactually, is said to cure cancer and AIDS. It has been a medical experiment that Tokay’s tongue contains chemical substance that has anti-tumor effects and can cure AIDS. This is why I said earlier that its selling price depends on its size..since accordingly..”the larger its size..the bigger it tongues would be”. However, the WHO (world health organization) did not support the fact about it as a cure for AIDS. But on the other hand, it was proven by some Chinese experts as they had been successful in developing a drug treatment for tumors from Tokay’s tongue that it can prevent cancer(that eventually started the tuko hunting fever in different countries).

Well, I guessed to those who hunt Tokay doesn’t bother if it could really cure such illnesses..coz what matters to them is that there would be a solid market for such

They often eat Horned Lizards and other reptiles but, there is a documented case of a rattlesnake being killed by a Texas Horned Lizard’s spines while trying to ingest it (Vorhies 1948). Mammalian predators include infamous animals such as the coyote, bobcat, raccoon, and possum. This long list even includes invasive animals such as the feral pig. Like their avian and reptile counterparts these predators usually predate both the animal and their eggs (Hernandez et al 1997). Last but not least the biggest predators these animals face are human. This comes in many different forms such as urbanization, mass agriculture, introducing invasive species, and directly hunting or killing these animals. With their cryptic behavior discussed earlier Texas Horned Lizards are often run over along roadsides while thermo regulating (Moeller et al 2005). Hunting is historically known for causing the demise of several animals, but in today’s laws prevent this. In retrospect the popularity and nostalgia associated with hunting Bobwhite Quail and catching horned toads is what has created such an effort to preserve…

The western swamp tortoise is one of Australia’s most endangered reptiles. This is because of habitat clearance for things like agriculture, clay mining and other urban and industrial development; climate change (like the increase of aridity), foxes and other animals are hunting them, draining the swamps and inappropriate fire regimes. It doesn’t help that they have slow breeding, a certain diet and a very rare…

Atheris Matildae is usually black with yellow zigzags although its coloration varies between sexes. Also, it is easy to distinguish the atheris matildae from other snake species of the atheris group by its enlarged scales above its eyes, the eyelashes. Due to these amazing traits the Matildas horned viper is easily targeted. Not only is the illegal pet trade vanishing this species, daily diseases are also a prime factor. This is something nobody could control. In my personal opinion as a hopefully future herpetologist entrepreneur, dealing with a newly discovered snake species is a bad idea due to the fact we have limited…

The common name “Horned Toad” for Texas Horned Lizards comes from two of its most prominent physical characteristics. Phrynosoma cornutum has two large horns on the center of its head accompanied by lots of smaller horns around it (Bockstanz 2016). It is commonly called a “toad” due to its short flattened body and short legs (Seymour 2016). Spines are found all over the body of the Texas Horned lizard and down its tail (Seymour 2016). Sexual dimorphism between males and females can be seen in two ways, body size with females being larger and the presence of femoral pores on males (Figure2). It has been shown that southern populations of P. cornutum are on average larger that northern populations (Henke & Montemayor 1997). In southern populations…
