Louie Zamperini, when asked what he would do if he had to go through his experiences again, replied that he would “kill himself”(page number). In fact, most of the people involved in any war end up hurt either physically or mentally. Louie Zamperini was captured in WWII by the Japanese and survived 2 years in captivity. In Louie’s story, the two emerging mental side effects caused by war are jealousy and anger. After the war, Louie felt much anger toward his captors. This overtook him, leaving him more injured than he was in the camps. In the camps, he had his defiance and his resiliency. When he got back, he could not resist the urge to drink, and he did not recover very quickly. In the book Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand conveys the fact that war is an extreme event that can have very negative effects on those involved.…

Use of this extremely racist character juxtaposes Huck’s ideas of slavery and and emphasis to the great extent of racism during this time. The systematic racism that is universally accepted by everyone in the community, Huck sees as immoral and as an ideology that is designed to hold back and oppress a whole race, so he tries to change this by intervening and acting as a Marxist instrument to remove this widely accepted oppressive…
I attend the premier high school in the state of Illinois and I am constantly reminded about it. Even though this has become a running joke between the students, I am really glad that I have been able to attend my prestigious high school, because Edwardsville High School that has motivated me to be successful and given me amazing opportunities that I may not have had somewhere else.…
One of the biggest fears of college students is gaining an excessive amount of weight. As most UMass students know, the school’s dining commons are currently ranked second in the United States by the Princeton Review. When I began attending school, the term “Freshman 15” was a common term that was often spoken about amongst my friends. The term “Freshman 15” refers to the amount of weight which is expected to be gained in the first year of college because of the easy access of food. I always looked at the “Freshman 15” as a myth before college. I wanted to learn more about UMass Amherst’s food. I wondered if it could be possible that UMass could be ranked as having one of the best dinning commons in the country and also have healthy…
The freshman 15 is a real thing and for adolescents heading off to college, they should make sure to be cautious of their eating habits. With 142 million Americans being obese, it has become more of a problem with people of all ages, but college freshman have a history of gaining weight when they arrive at school. People speculate that the behavioral, environmental, and occupational changes cause this, along with stress, exercise habits, and the fact that food is available at all times. No matter what the cause is, gaining weight in college is a real problem.…
People have judged and misunderstood others for as long as humans were on this Earth. People have a nasty habit to think of people who have been lonely and bullied as outsiders, although outsiders are just people who are completely misunderstood and judged the wrong way. If people took the time to know these “outsiders” people mistreat, they would understand that these people are just normal kids that got mistreated badly. Nobody wants to be an “outsider”, but sometimes you become one for various of different reasons like being a new kid, being smarter than most kids, wanting to be alone, and more.…
I think I’m the oddball of the family. I mean look at my cousins; two of them are invested in sports and compete at global sports tournaments, while the other cousin is the straight A, 4.0 student of the family. The adults of my family are in the fields of business, management, and labor positions. What am I interested in? Art. The “easy” subject. Most people treat art as if it were like riding a bike with training wheels on, and no possible way to fail. Word of my desire for a career in art sends adults into hysterics with questions, that can be mildly offensive, “What is your back up plan?” “How will you be able to make any money unless you get famous?” “What could you possibly do with a degree in art?” But I have always tried to be true…
All throughout our lives we have had to balance school with whatever important thing was going on at that time. In elementary school it was easy. We had to balance school and play time. In middle school it was a little more difficult because we had to balance school, our friends and the occasional relationship. High school was when it became a little tricky because it was when most of us got our first job. We then had to balance our job, friends, relationships, and school. We somehow managed to balance all of these things throughout our lives until college came along. College is a transition period for many students, most of which must learn to balance work, friends, serious relationships, and financial debt.…
Going back to my best year! Sophomore year was the year I had to get myself together and stop acting so amateur, it was the year I start acting like an adult. Therefore It was a great year for me. My sophomore year was not like other teenagers, I had many downfalls, but that didn't stop me from accomplishing my goals. Around this time I wanted to try a sport for the first time, so I tried out for the wrestling team, but they didn't work out so well. Sophomore year I didn't make any new friends, cause I don't like making new friends, it's just too much. My day one friends stayed the same, these are the people who have been through hell and back with me. I didn't learn how to drive my tenth grade year, because I was procrastinating. I was skipping school and getting into…
Canada has always been known as a peaceful country. Among other parts of the world consumed by riots, lawlessness and violence, Canada is seen as an oasis of democracy, freedom, and responsible government. However during October of 1970, it was made very clear that the potential for civil strife, terrorism, and even revolution exists in the true north strong and free. During this terrifying month, a terrorist group calling themselves the Front de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ) kidnapped British diplomat James Cross and provincial minister Pierre Laporte, and threatened to kill them unless a series of demands was met by the federal government. Then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau refused to give in to the demands of terrorists, and responded by sending the armed forces to assist the Quebec police, and on October 16th, 1970, Pierre Trudeau addresses the nation, explained his position, and informed Canada that he had invoked the War Measures Act. This move suspended the civil liberties outlined in the Bill of Rights and gave the police and army extraordinary power to pursue leads and…

Sloppiness, a lazy, unproductive habit, causes errors, confusion, and other undesirable characteristics. A person who is sloppy is usually too lazy to break the habit and become organized. It is an unproductive habit because not much is getting done, and nothing can be located to accomplish any work. Many people suffer from this habit with the main consequence being they continually make errors. For example, I have made the mistake on a major math test of sloppily writing numbers or letters which I mistake for different numbers and letters resulting in a minor mistake that affects the entire answer. Sloppiness also causes confusion and aggravation. One might…
