The experiment showed that age and body weight contribute greatly to the blood pressure of an individual. Persons that were obese and in an older age demographic had greater instances of hypertension. Hypertension occurred earlier in males than in females. Hypertension seemed to be greater influenced by behavior/lifestyle choices than family history.…
The statistical data does not conclusively prove that being obese in childhood causes a higher risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. It is possible that the increase in adult cardiovascular problems of children who were obese is connected to the increase in monitoring of these children instead of a true correlation between childhood obesity and cardiovascular disease. Therefor, it is not clear as to weather the conclusions are appropriate. Moreover it is difficult with the information provided to make a conclusive decision as to the studies effectiveness. The study does show a clear correlation between childhood obesity and an increased risk of adult cardiovascular disease. However there are mitigating factors such as the amount of monitoring study participants received that may indicate that it is not obesity that caused the increased risk but that these participants were found to have risk factors that might be present in normal weight children had they also been monitored. The studies findings emphasize the importance of maintaining ideal weight from youth to adulthood in cardiovascular risk…
The causes and contributing factors to this health disparity was not clearly outlined in the article. Some things were mention which led me to believe that it is a lifestyle disease, the things you eat and daily activities are all contributing factors. The number factor that stood out to me also was the daily intake of salt can be a cause of high blood pressure.…
I agree with him on this when it comes to teenagers, because I can understand how teenagers now days all they want is fast food. I have a teenager niece who is struggling with overweigh and is not her fault because, her mother died when she was four years old and she was raised by her grandmother who can’t read or write English so that give her the opportunity to get eat what she wants. One of the other main paint David Zinczenko talked about was that in 1994, diabetes in children was only about 5 percent of childhood case were obesity related or type 2 diabetes. “Todays, according to the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes accounts for at least 30 percent of all new childhood cases of diabetes in this country.” This means the percentage isn’t decreasing it is increasing a lot from what we sow. In summer, David Zinczenko argues that, particularly for teenagers, unhealthy food and fattening fast food is almost unavoidable.…
In New Jersey, the most at-risk children may be in Trenton. Also, the rates are highest among Hispanic children. Most alarmingly, the largest differences between Trenton public school children and national estimates were seen among the youngest children 49 percent in Trenton were overweight or obese versus 21 percent nationally. It’s imperative those kids establish healthy habits. It’s all very well to outlaw jumbo servings of soda, as New…

The organization Healthy People 2020 establishes benchmarks while monitoring the progress over time (healthypeople.gov). They empower individuals to make healthier decisions while trying to prevent infection/illness, and they collaborate with different groups and organizations for the best outcome by using evidence base practice (healthypeople.gov). One of the most common vaccinations is the measles, mumps, and rubella also known as the M.M.R. A child receives this in two series between 12-15 months and 4-6 years old. Healthy People 2020 has an objective to reduce or eliminate the number of cases pertaining to mumps, measles, and rubella (healthypeople.gov). Children are more susceptible to illness due to immature…
How would you respond if a person told you that salt intake caused hypertension because a research study found 0.80 correlation between these two variables?…
Children that are obese are more likely to increase their risk of cardiovascular disease such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In a population based sample of 5-17 year olds, 70% of obese youths had at least one of the risk factor for cardiovascular disease (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). Diabetes is another health issue among obese children. Children are more diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, but Type 2 diabetes is brought on by obesity and inactivity. Type 2 diabetes found in children used to be very rare and a child developing this type of disease is growing rapidly. Researchers from the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study released data showing that “Type 2 diabetes in 10-19 year olds has increased 21% between the years of 2001-2010 (Gebel, PhD).…
The prevalence of hypertension increases with age and is higher in African American than in Whites. In comparison to whites, African Americans developed high BP at an earlier age, and it is more severe at any decade. As a result, African Americans have a higher prevalence of stroke, heart disease, and end-stage renal disease when compared with whites. In addition, African American has a higher mortality rate at every level of BP elevation compared with whites. In both rises, the prevalence is higher in less educated than in more educated people. Hypertension is more prevalent in men than in women until age, 55 after age 55 it is more prevalent in women than men. The status of hypertension control has improved considerably over the past years. Large-scale education programs provided by various organizations have increased awareness of hypertension. The percentage of patients with hypertension on medication who have their BP controlled has also improved substantially. The diagnosis of hypertension requires that elevated readings be present on at least three occasions during several weeks.…

This shouldn’t come to a surprise to most, that America holds the number one position for obesity. (Wintrup) Not only Americans as a whole but the children. More than one of five children between the ages of 6 and 17 are considered overweight. This is something that needs to change immediately. There are too many health risks at stake for these young children including: diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and poor academic performance. (Alan) In 2005 a study found that children today may have shorter lives by two to five years than their parents because of obesity. (Palmer) Childhood obesity alone is not the only issue facing children today, although being overly large may prevent the child from living life to the fullest. However, the co-morbidities relating to childhood obesity are the real killers. Hypertension, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments, sleep apnea, and depression are just some of the common problems linked directly to obesity in children (Henry). Others…
Nicholas (Nick) Reeves, who weighs around 117 pounds at the young age of 8 years, is fighting the bulge (excess fat). According to his mother, Angel Reeves, “He’s just hungry all the time. He can finish eating a meal, and then, five minutes later, he 's coming in the kitchen saying, “I 'm hungry again. I 'm hungry again '". Angel Reeves states, “Nick is a very active child who loves to play basketball. But his weight has already impaired his health. Nick had to have his tonsils removed because the thickness of his neck was causing sleep apnea”. Nick weighs more than his elder brother, who is 13-year-old, and keeps teasing Nick for being obese, not to mention the teasing he receives at school! Obesity in children is not just about teasing and taunting and their emotional side-effects, such as low self esteem. Similar to the grown-ups, the health-risks associated with obesity, are serious for children, too. Obesity in children brings about an array of health-issues, ranging from type two-diabetes, to high blood pressure, to heart attack and the list goes on (Donvan & Patria, 2010). Thus, we see that childhood obesity is a threat to the health of children, and therefore, finding an effective comprehensive solution to this epidemic should be our priority.…
Being overweight or obese is nonetheless a health issue (Gibbons). The world’s oldest metabolic disorder is impacting an even younger age group than ever before. Studies reveal that obese children run a high risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) which can be fatal. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota identified obesity as the number one cause of Chronic Liver disease in the United States. America’s population is getting less and less healthy at younger ages, they will eventually face risks of chronic diseases. This problem is not going to be resolved by changing our way of life, America is going to end up replacing people's organs with artificial ones. Dr. Ariel Feldstein, principal investigator, quoted “As a pediatrician, I feel we are dealing with a big epidemic- NAFLD is certainly surpassing hepatitis C, in terms of potential damage to the liver.” Researchers have identified over 250 obesity-related genes (Wasowicz). Body Mass Index (BMI) is a way to determine obesity. As someone's BMI increases, so does their risk for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). CHD can cause build up in the arteries and leads to a deficiency in oxygen-rich blood traveling to your heart. There are a great deal of health issues as a direct result of obesity. One of those issues is heart failure, where your heart cannot pump enough blood to supply for your body. High blood pressure is when the force of blood pushing on your…
