This paper will attempt to prove my view of the exchange of hypodermic needles and its consequences in today's society. This practice is legal in some states and has reduced the spread of HIV but is it our job to provide this service to junkies? I will try to prove my point.
Hypodermic Needles
Hypodermic Needle Exchange/Sale "Drug users in Seattle say it is still difficult to find clean needles despite a state law allowing pharmacies to sell hypodermic needles to anyone over 18, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper reported. The Washington state legislature adopted the law earlier this year, and about half of Seattle-area pharmacies have agreed to sell the needles. However, many pharmacists are unaware of the law and others are concerned that they may be helping people ruin their lives or that selling needles may attract a bad element to their store, the newspaper reported."(Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly2002). In many countries needle exchange programs are already being used. these same programs are starting to become common in the US. I do not believe that governments should be using tax payers money to fund these needle exchange programs. While it is the Drug users right to use drugs it is not the governments job to fund their addictions. Far too much tax payer money is already being wasted in trying to stop people from using drugs with little success. I would say this tax money is far more useful somewhere else, perhaps it could be used to pay off some of our national debt.
Conclusion It is my opinion that the use of tax payers money to pay for needles that are used to inject illegal drugs is kind of a oxymoron. Why would you fun the use of these drugs when you have already spend too much money trying to fight the use of such drugs. this may sound cruel but this is the typical survival if the fittest at work here. People use illegal drugs that can potentially kill them all while knowing the risks. In my opinion the
