One way to be an American is by seeing others Equally. In the poem “I, Too, Sing America”, by Langston Hughes, he writes about African American’s and how they were treated in the early 1900s. An American is a person who sees equality in everyone and in every race. American’s are not people who won’t accept others of a different skin color, such as Langston Hughes, who is an African-American. To Hughes an american is someone who will “see how beautiful I am and be ashamed”. This is showing that one day he will be equal and they will see how beautiful he is, that he isn’t any different just because of the color of his skin. He hopes that one day they’ll show him respect and he will just laugh in their faces.
