ICT (information and communications technology) is a term that includes any communication device such as radio, television, newspaper, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning.
ICT development Index
The ICT Development Index (IDI) is a composite index combining 11 indicators into one benchmark value (presented on a scale from 0 to 10). The objectives of the IDI are to monitor progress in ICT developments in both developed and developing countries and to measure the evolution of the global digital divide. The IDI is divided into three categories:
●Access
The access sub-index captures ICT readiness, and includes five infrastructure and access indicators (fixed-telephony, mobile telephony, international Internet bandwidth, households with computers, and households with Internet).
●Use
The use sub-index captures ICT intensity, and includes three ICT intensity and usage indicators (Internet users, fixed (wired)-broadband, and mobile broadband).
●Skills
The skills sub-index captures ICT capability or skills as indispensable input indicators. It includes three proxy indicators (adult literacy, gross secondary enrolment and gross tertiary enrolment). India ranks 119 in the IDI 2011, which was 116 in 2010
