In the veterinary field there are four main and important roles that work together to create a well-oiled team to ensure that their day-to-day jobs run smoothly.
Firstly, the most important role is the Veterinary Surgeon. Veterinary Surgeons are responsible for the medical and surgical treatment for the animals. They also work to try to prevent disease in animals and the spread of disease. Secondly, you have Veterinary Nurses who fundamentally work as an assistant to the Veterinary Surgeons as the Surgeons rely on the Nurses to ensure the smooth running of the practice. This requires four years of full time study normally in which students get the chance to participate in placements in places of work such as referral surgeries, veterinary hospitals and large animal practices. This degree can then lead you on the career paths such as clinical nursing, working in research, teaching, managing practices, working for companies that provide animal insurance and also journalism.
Another option is to complete NVQ levels 2 and 3 in Veterinary Nursing, to complete these you have to be employed within a working practice and the practice must either be a training and assessment practice of a veterinary nurse approved centre. In order to complete the NVQ students must be employed for either two years at full time which is deemed to be thirty five hours a week or over four years at part time, deemed to be twenty hours a week.
