16 November 2013 Imperfection It is said that "Every rose has its thorns." In other words, something so delicate, pure, and beautiful can have evil characteristics. Sometimes in life Individuals make mistakes; many of these mistakes lead to conflict and make them look bad. This commonly said expression "Every rose has its thorns" demonstrates the imperfection in even the sweetest of angels. Miley Cyrus began as a positive role model for kids and teens and now she is setting negative examples. Miley was an average girl with brown wavy hair showing her crocked teeth everytime she smiled. She became a tween popstar for the show Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. Young girls looked up to her as a role model. Everything was headed in the right direction for Miley, people admired her catchy music and loved her glowing style. Her songs were the ones that we could listen to over and over and rememeber every lyric; like her song "Nobody is Perfect." As Miley grew older, the ficitional character "Hannah Montana" began to disappear. Miley than chopped off her long beautiful hair and made it into a short boyish haircut. She wore a lot of see through, revealing outfits that most people would be embarassed to wear in public.Addition to her style change, her music changed also. Many people were shocked because they have never seen this side of Miley before. Her new songs were a center of controversy; the video of "We can't stop" and her VMA’s performance showed her dancing inappropriately in front of the whole wide world. As many people watched her bizzare performance, their mouths slowly opened and their eyes were bulging out of their heads. Miley made a mistake of changing way too fast and we were not ready

He survived by refusing to let his captors deprive him of his humanity and make him “invisible.” Louie’s life could have been very different if he had never been captured. _Unbroken_ by Laura Hillenbrand is by far the most interesting book that I have read in my young life. I was enthralled by the story and it forced me to think about my own life. The clear message of the book is to never give up and don't let anger or bitterness get in the way of a great life. For without the raw evil of Watanabe Louis' post war life couldn't be so powerful and redeeming. There are so many great plot lines in this book: the rise of Zamperini as an Olympic athlete, his heroism towards his colleagues while on a raft for 27 days, his courage in the camps despite the torture, but his greatness really showed when he was able to transcend his pain and its incumbent bitterness to turn his own life around. This was the most gripping part of the book for me because most people would have acted very differently than Louie if put into the same situation as him. His survival and eventual happy life was a testament to not only his will but to his ability to see into himself and make changes. While there were many significant and meaningful parts to the book, the most compelling parts of the book were Louis Zamperini's life postwar and what he had to do to save himself, and the relationship with Matsuhuro Watanabe, also known as the Bird.…

After analyzing Edwin W. Koc’s article, “The Myth of the Millennials,” he demonstrates disbelief that millennial students are more than “self-indulgent, entitled, and dependent as adults and employees.” His point specifies that millennial parents emphasize their children’s needs first by often working more than one job, these millennial parents ensured that their children could engage in their individual desires. However, instead of helping them, millennial students and workers grow up with a false notion of reality; they erroneously believe that life is all about them, which creates problems in the workplace. The only way to make a more educated hypothesis regarding whether or not the work-life balance or the helicopter parents are legends or real, is to conduct more extensive studies on a much broader platform. To better understand Millennials students and employees, one must understand what drives them to succeed perhaps it's easiest to understand who they are not.…

Theseus’ Ship set sail with a cargo of lumber, and each day, Theseus used the lumber to replace parts of the ship. By the time it arrived at its destination, the cargo was empty and all the parts of the ship had been replaced. Was it still the same ship? And if not, at what point did it stop being the same ship? Was it when the first change was made? When Theseus replaced half of the original ship? Would he have had to replace more than half for it to be a different ship? This question and the variety of possible answers has been a topic of great controversy among many philosophers over thousands of years, yet there still has never been agreement on one right answer. So many theories have been used to determine an answer to the problem, and every one has faced praise from some, and academic criticism from others. Thomas Reid’s imperfect identity theory, however, offers the most practical solution to the Theseus’ Ship question.…

Society often expects certain type of behavior from everyone. But in the big picture, this behavior is only based on what type of sex you are and what your responsibility according to your sex. In today’s society, we have discrimination; high expectations and a set of norms that in a lot of cases only apply or are strictly apply in one gender only. While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…

Everyone in this life has a need of survive. As an immigrant, is very difficult to come to a new country and start a new life from the beginning. In the essay “The Back of the Bus” written by Mary Mebane talks about a bus ride from North Carolina to South Carolina when the segregation laws were still in place. Mebane wrote this piece because she “wanted to show what it was like to live under legal segregation before the civil rights act of 1964” (Mebane, 167). On the other hand, the essay “Like Mexicans” written by Gary Soto, the author expresses how is to growing up in the ‘barrio’ and makes a comparison between two different cultures. Even though: “The Back of the Bus” and “Like Mexicans” are although different because of segregation and differences of cultures, they share the same struggles through racism, stereotype and having no choice.…

According to the essay Herodotus: Xerxes Invades Greece, from The Histories, Herodotus was a very famous historian, who gave his account of the battle of Thermopylae. It is significant though to recognize that Herodotus was Greek and giving an account of what happened when the Persians defeated them. In the text Xerxes has many incidents that portray him as superstitious and tyrannical. Some examples of Xerxes’ tyranny is his plans to “march an army through Europe against Greece,” his want to not rest until he has taken and burnt Athens, wants to extend the Persian territory throughout all of Europe, his beheading of his master- builders, and his lack of mercy towards his slave and his five sons. Xerxes shows his superstitions when he sends for the Magians to tell him why the sun has disappeared, and the day has so quickly tuned to night. Turning to the actions in battle, those of the Spartans tell me that they are a strong willed people who do not give up easily, if at all, even when faced with a great challenge and are outnumbered. Besides this essay showing the Greeks strong will, this essay seems to promote their use of wit and skill in tricking the Persians into thinking there were less of them than there actually was. The account was written by a Greek, so the information in the story would cast them in a more positive light. Lastly, in our text, Western Civilization, there is a thurough evaluation of the significance of the Persian invasions on the Greek political and intellectual…

Whether an educator simply recited information from textbooks or truly gave students a well-rounded view point on their specific-content matter can make the difference between a disinterested and interested student. William W. Brickman and Paulo Freire are famous educators whose works have had significant impacts on the cohorts after them.…

We all have judged a book by its cover, thinking that it wouldn't be worth to open and read just because the cover doesn't look so cool and popular like other books that we know today. However, as soon as you read it, you find out that you were wrong and that the book is nice and interesting, probably the best book you have ever read! See? This is the problem that we face nowadays. Most of the time, people judge when they don't know the whole story, we judge someone because they look different and don’t have the same appearance as you. They might look scary, lonely and shy. But who knows, what if they are really nice and polite. A person shouldn’t be about his appearance or looks or if he is pleasing. It is what is on the inside that really matters.…
