Recently I have heard some of my colleagues asking whywe should give tests, quizzes and other activities in class when at the end students must be promoted to the other forms. Many a times I have questioned myself but I know that in order for me to judge a student’s academic performance one has to test the child. Therefore, assessment practices are an essential part of teaching and learning. Without these practices we may never tell whether a student grasped the content or not. As teachers if we are able to tell about their progress we may be able to plan effectively for our class so as to adjust our lessons and facilitatetheir learning. We will also serve as motivational factors that will help shape the learning environment.
Student’s progress must be monitored as we go along our lessons. When we assess we want to take a close look at the strengths and weaknesses of our students.
