“Frances appears to have no defense against the ravages of time except her marriage, and she finds the prospect of losing this security difficult to bear.” (Archer, Stanley) Frances as the majority of the married women in the nineteen thirties’ would probably never consider a divorce due to the role women had that time. By affirming that Michael would like to be free, she did not quite get a “yes” as an answer, but by saying that sometimes he would like to be free “ he allows this to be interpreted as a warning that he will eventually leave Frances” (Giles, James) which is consider as bad as a direct answer. By their dialog, it is apparent for the reader that Michael and Frances never spoke about what they wanted for their relationship before and during their five years together, and the desire for most of us that Michael should have been honest to Frances since the beginning, so she could has had the chance to made a different decision for her “love life”. They both appeared to not be very clear about their feelings. Frances would not tell him what she truly felt about his actions, she would only repetitively tell him what he was doing, but not mention how that was affecting her. Maybe because back them a woman did not have the same power as today to speak for herself, or maybe just because Frances was not very good at expressing her feelings. Michael is also not very good at expressing his feelings for his wife, or maybe he just do not feel anything for her anymore. They both are not clear about their opinions related to their feelings and what they want for their future
