In 1978 the first test tube baby was born as a result of in-vitro fertilization. This was a huge breakthrough in the world of infertility and promising news for anyone wanting to have their own child. There are many various ways to have a child other than naturally, but in-vitro fertilization played a key role for the scientific study of infertility.
There were many events that led up to the birth of the first in vitro fertilization baby.
In 1884, the first artificial insemination is performed. (PBS) A scientist with the name of Shettles claims to have placed a fertilized egg in a woman in 1962. (PBS) Shettles’ procedure was never confirmed and to this day the truth still remains a mystery. Edwards creates laparoscopy and implants an infertile woman with a fertilized egg. (PBS) The first ever successful test tube baby that was born was named Louise Brown. Louise’s Parents who had tried IVF many times and miscarried. Couples were given the new choice of in vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization is the option that is chosen the most often when considering having a child among infertile couples (American Pregnancy Association) In vitro fertilization is very expensive, but this is funding that goes to great use in science. Although this treatment is expensive, many couples are willing to pay the price, no matter the risk. It gave couples the chance to have a child that was 100% theirs, rather than using a donor and the child than carrying only one parent’s genetics. This event led to many other movements in the ways of having a child. This was a huge step forward for anyone considered infertile.
