Answer these questions as it relates to the school you are working or want to be working in or your community.
1. Do children with disabilities attend the neighborhood recreation programs and schools they would attend if they did not have disabilities? (2pts) The children with disabilities in my district do not attend their neighborhood schools. There are certain schools designated within the district that enroll children with disabilities. If the child has a sibling (without a disability), parents can choose to send that child to their neighborhood school or to the same school the student with the disabilities is attending. The only recreation program that children with disabilities attend in my district is through the YWCA, even though there is a district middle school that as a recreation facility attached to it.
2. Do children with disabilities receive the supports they need to be successful (instructional accommodations, assistive technology, augmentative communication, adult and peer assistance)? (2pts) For the most part, children with disabilities do receive the instructional, assistive and augmentative communication needed for the student to be successful. However, in regards to adult/peer assistance there is a directive to reduce the number of paraprofessionals in the district. Currently there are some severe needs students, that require a one-on-one paraprofessional, and this requirement is stated in the student’s IEP, but to date the student does not have a paraprofessional at all.
3. Do staff and volunteers receive the training and supports necessary to successfully teach and/or engage all children in their activities or classrooms (planning time, consultation and collaboration with professionals)? (2pts) There are no volunteers currently for children with disabilities. I do not believe
