Indian Festival
Pongal is the only festival of Hindu that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated on the fourteenth of January every year. Pongal marks the beginning of Uttarayana. In Hindu temples bells, drums, clarinets and conch shells herald the joyous occasion of Pongal. To symbolize a bountiful harvest, rice is cooked in new pots until they boil over. Some of the rituals performed in the temple include the preparation of rice, the chanting of prayers and the offering of vegetables, sugar cane and spices to the gods. Pongal signals the end of the traditional farming season, giving farmers a break from their monotonous routine. Farmers also perform puja to some crops. In fact, four festivals are celebrated in Tamil Nadu for four consecutive days in that week. 'Bogi' is celebrated on January 13, 'Pongal' on Jan 14, 'Maattuppongal' on Jan 15, and 'Thiruvalluvar Day' on Jan 16. The festival is celebrated for four days. On, the first day, Bhogi, the old clothes and materials are thrown away and fired, marking the beginning of a new life. The second day, the Pongal day, is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel. People also prepare savories and sweets, visit each other's homes, and exchange greetings. The third day, Mattu Pongal, is meant to offer thanks to the cows and buffaloes, as they are used to plough the lands. On the last day, Kanum Pongal, people go out to picnic. A festival called Jalli kathu is held in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjavur, all in Tamil Nadu, on this day. Bundles of money are tied to the horns of Pongal ferocious bulls which the villagers try to retrieve. Everyone joins in the community meal, at which the food is made of the freshly harvested grain. This day is named and celebrated as Tamilian Tirunal in a fitting manner through out Tamil Nadu. The harvest festival of Pongal symbolizes the veneration of the first fruit. In south India, all three days of Pongal are considered important. However,

For many years, men have achieved many goals in life. They were able to do so, based on the ranks that other men gave them. This system changed man in many ways and affected them both physically and mentally in this world that made them who they are today. “Masculinity as Homophobia” by Michael S. Kimmel, is an article that explains the world of men and their struggles in life proving their manhood to others and their fear of other men who are not manly enough. There are some arguments that the author mentions that talks about how manhood these days are and how to achieve approval of manhood in people's own mind or idea such as judging others, bringing fear into other people's lives, and changing their personality and way of thinking towards life. David Leverenz argues that “ideologies of manhood have functioned primarily in relation to the gaze of male peers and male authority” . This ranking system causes men to act violent against others in order to achieve their ranks and gain their manhood in life; they see these ranks as a ticket to acceptance to high ranking men and as an approval that they deserve to be…

Art has been around for what seems to be forever, yet no one has truly found an answer to the question, what is art? For some, definitions such as, art is “which implies knowledge of materials and their skillful handling.”(Ocvirk, 5), may be fulfilling, but in my opinion art has a much deeper meaning to it. In America getting married is one of the biggest celebrations many men and women have the opportunity of being apart of. In the United States, marriages can happen many different ways- from Catholic ceremonies which take place in a Catholic church where a priest marries the two individuals to the simpler route of the two lovers getting hitched at their cities courthouse. The United States recognizes marriage as the formal union between two people, typically recognized by the law, in which the two become partners. As Americans, we are much more lenient with the idea of marriage and the actual wedding process, however; in places such as Pakistan- a wedding symbolizes much more for the Indian culture. Indian weddings are known for their extremely elaborate ceremonies- including before and after the “big day”, and their opulent celebrations (Husain, 120).…
