    * The negative side that comes along in being in a diverse group can lead to a decrease in the group’s productivity, which this can cause a friction between the team members. Within the group, team members are forced to work with others they may not talk to or otherwise come in contact with on a day-to-day base. What this does is creates a negative atmosphere if the teams culture is not acceptable and diverse. If team members do not get along this could result in dislike among those who do not wish to engage in acceptance. It is a work in progress, which is why individuals of different backgrounds prefer to work with members of the same background; eventually this will change with time. When people of different backgrounds are forced to work together this can cause a negative impact within the group. With different elements of culture,…

Scholars have explained the dysfunctional impact of diversity by the conflict group theory. The latter theory describes a fierce competition between groups within a team for important and restricted information or resources. Thus, this explains the amplified in-group solidarity and out-group devaluation within the same team. These processes cause communication issues and factionalism, which result in a decline in group functioning (Brief et al., 2005). Also called social categorization, this theory holds the perspective that resemblances and disparities are the foundation for categorization processes in teams. These processes discern between self and others whilst also distinguishing between its own in-group and other out-groups within the…

It is often believed that teams that are diverse are more creative and productive than teams that are homogenous. Diverse teams with different perspectives and skills have more to contribute towards getting a job done. The variety of thoughts and skills give more than one method or theory of carrying out a particular job. At the same time it can also be argued that teams that are non-diverse coordinate and communicate better within the team. So that brings us to the question that can the diversity in teams lead to negative or poor performance because of miscommunication, conflict, lack of understanding within the team ? Professors Elizabeth Mannix and Margaret A. Neale had conducted research programs to study diversity in teams and its effects. They found facts that define both positive and negative effects of diverse teams. However, they refute any consistent or definite effects of diversity. The professors instead focused on conditions or situations where diversity has an effect on performance and the reasons for it. Managers and team leaders can control some of the conditions or situations and Professors Mannix and Neale advise them on how to maximise the advantages and minimise the disadvantages of diverse…

A team is more than people who share a workplace; “a real team is a group of very different individuals who share a commitment to working together to achieve common goals” (Fripp, 2007). More attention is being given to the influence of diversity in the workplace as the structural makeup of personnel continues to change (Hobman and Bordia, 2006). Knouse (2006) speculates that teams composed of diverse individuals should have more opinions to contribute, varying methods to solving problems, and broader viewpoints to analyze decisions. However, that does not always work to the team’s advantage. The differences could be so vast as to drive the team in to chaos and render it unable to attain its purpose (REFERENCE?). The determination on this theory reasons that the importance of a team’s effectiveness lies not in the composition of the individual members but in how the team chooses to utilize its resources and focus its attention.…
