Inequality In The Workplace: Article Analysis
Justin Wolfers’ article on inequalities in credit for women in the economic field brings up surprising, yet realistic issues, providing examples for sexism and prejudice in the workplace. It haunts me that my future may be diminished solely because of my choice to work with a group or enter a certain field. Although, I believe that more research needs to be done regarding the quality of work done by both genders in a group setting before anyone comes to a conclusion on this topic. Unfortunately, it seems as if sexism in promotions is a tricky problem to solve for fear of providing women with an unfair advantage. I do wish that this article included how the data has changed, either progressive or regressively, in recent years as the data spanned

    Katz, D. (1987). Sex discrimination in hiring: The influence of organizational climate and need for approval on decision making behavior. Psychology of Women Quarterly, 11(1), 11-20. Previous studies have caused the idea that equally skilled men and women are assessed unequally when applying for jobs. The present study observes the influence from different organizational workplaces or “the quality of an organization’s internal environment” (Katz, 1987), and society’s need for approval on the notion of biased employees decisions. The study sought out three main hypotheses, if an unfair organizational environment would influence people to hire a male applicant over an identical female applicant. Second, that in a workplace a male applicant would be ranked as a better fit and more likely to stay with the company longer than a female applicant. And third, that those subjects with a high need of approval would match more to the demands of job on the hire and salary assessments than lower approval motivation applicants. The study included 161 male undergrads enrolled in a business class. They were given a booklet which contained experimental materials necessary in controlling organizational workplace. They were also given either a female or male completed application and asked for their judgments on an applicant’s suitability for the position. Results from the experiment showed that as initially expected, males were favored over females in the unfair environment. The results also showed that males were chosen as fitting significantly better than females, and that men were also offered higher salaries in the same conditions. In my opinion, the implications of this study can establish that the workplace can deeply influence the decisions of hiring workers and lead to gender bias.…

    Approximately 70% of employer’s expenses consist of labor costs. An employer that hires only females can save 20 cent per dollar compared to one that only hires men. Since a female worker saves the company 20 cents per dollar, she is performing equally to a man – to a lower cost. Since marginal benefit versus marginal cost for women is 20 cents higher than the ratio of men, there should be a clear incentive for hiring women. There has been a major discussion over the passed years about the questions around whether women and minorities are being wage-discriminated on the basis of their sex/ethnicity. This paper will elaborate on the part of women. In the 1950’s one third of the US workforce was made out of women compared to today where two thirds are females. Apparently, this can be seen as a result of more women entering the labor market, whether they are proactively or reactively introduced to the market.     Women have experienced a historic situation of inequality in the social as well as professional aspects. Women are normally the ones that would take care of the children, do the household chores, and in rural areas; they would work in the field with the rest of the family. Just like how the Breaking Barriers article states, “from an early age, girls are dressed in pink boys in blue.     Inequality between two genders shows up as early as in the beginning of one’s career. Influenced by gender roles, women and men tend to choose jobs that can help them fulfill their social expectations (Weisgram, Dinella, and Fulcher 245).     In the last half century, many adult females have joined the workforce, many times doing the same work as men. Adult women make up 51% of the population; it seems only natural that the workforce should reflect this. Many of the same rules that stood true for avoiding race discrimination stand true for gender discrimination as well: no lumping people together, no stereotyping, and no belittling. It should also be noted to not refer to adult females over the age of 18 as “girls”. Most males in the workforce are referred to as “men” or “guys”, and so “girls” is seen as belittling women. It is important to treat everyone the same. Women often face a double-edged sword. If they are in lower-level positions in a company and are content staying there, they are often seen as lacking ambition or inferior. However, if a woman is in a position of authority, the words power-hungry, formidable, cold, bossy, etc. are often used to describe her.
