Human trafficking has been around for many decades and it is not quite a subject many talk about. Here in the United States, the people have become unaware and have not realized that anything could be happening in their own backyard. People that are seen and talked to everyday could be one of the victims and no one would ever know. High percentage of victims are women and children that are kept away, secluded, and hidden. They are taught to only do very minimal things, say certain things and act a certain way. They are punished if their clients complain or were not satisfied enough. These victims are placed in dangerous situations and with dangerous people who many times end up beating and in worse cases, killing them. Most people do not know where they all come from, they are mostly victims whom are brought from their home country and are kidnapped or taken away from their houses when least expected. These victims are vulnerable because of the many lies the traffickers have told them and many are told they will return if they …show more content…
follow the rules. Instead, they get raped, sold, or even killed for personal enjoyment
Most victims in the United States rarely have a normal life after their abduction.
Most cases end up in ptsd, in which many seek professional help from a psychiatrist. Although the victims try to have a normal life, many end up having emotional problems such as depression. This is only if the victims attain their escape to freedom. Most victims are induced to the sex industry in which many are young innocent beautiful girls who are used for domestic servitude and agricultural work after they have been “used up”. These are usually girls from ages six to
eighteen.
When many of the victims become used to the routine they are numb and become the ones who involve younger girls to become apart of their organization. Traffickers use a specific phrase that became a part of a way they work. “Use a slave to catch slaves”. That means that the victims that were in captive were later trained to catch other young girls and lure them into the business to teach them and force them the same way they had been forced to. Traffickers use this method as a way to hide evidence of their involvement or even just to make the victims do all their dirty work. In this industry there are a lot of people who also become trained to kill and they are used when traffickers need to kill any enemies, suspects or witnesses. About 80% of the victims are women and 20% that are men, are mainly forced as hitman or trained to become pimps. Many victims are desperate and many don't think they are ever going to get out of the hole they are in. In sold, by Patricia McCormick, Lakshmi says,” This affliction--hope--is so cruel and stubborn, I believe it will kill me”(112). Many victims end up becoming faithful to this malicious tragic they are brought into, that the most productive thing they can do is adapt. Just how Lakshmi says it will kill her to think about the hope she could have, many others think like that as well. Just like Lakshmi, many victims dreams are taken away, their goals in life are ruined and children's pureness is broken and damaged. According to the U.S. State Department there are about 600,000 to 800,000 people trafficked every year for about $90. This means that for less then $100 you can end a victim's life. Many families that struggle financially and live in poor countries, sell their children off. At first, they are told that their children will be in better hands. Many of the traffickers try to pass off as social service caseworkers who look to bring children here to the U.S for better opportunities.
