Presentation: I've chosen the topic ”school shooting” because i think it's a very exiting topic and it's a very big problem in the United States.
In my presentation i'll talk about what kind of people there do it, the shooting at Columbine high school, the second amendment and at last i'll tell you my own opinion and what the main reason could be.
Information about school shooting:
Many young people die every year because of school shootings, and it's a very big problem in the United States. USA is the country with most school shootings every year. In Germany 381 people die every year because of school shootings. In England there are 68 killed and in USA there are 11.127, and it's a very big difference. Mostly the reason of it, is unknown and it could be all people there do it. It's not expected at all, it's just a normally day at school. You don't know were the next shooting will find place and who there will do
it.
One of the most prominent school shootings was that at Columbine High School in 1999.
Columbine High School:
The school massacre was committed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who were students at Columbine High. Eric and Dylan arrived in their cars at around 11 o'clock on Tuesday, April 20th. They went to the cafeteria where they plannted bombs, which they set to explode at lunchtime, when the cafeteria would be filled with puplis. But something went wrong and, the bombs didn't explode. The two guys were prepared, so they pulled their shotguns out from their bags, and begin shooting students in the area. They murdered thirteen people, before they took their own life.
The thing about Dylan, was his family had never owned a gun and the shooting was a shock for the family. In an article from Oprah Magazine in November 2009, Dylan’s mom talks about her experience and feelings on the shooting. Thw first time she heard about the situation, she thought that Dylan was injured from the shooting. Today she still can’t believe what happened. She still got the horror and feels the pain of what her son did.
Some of the after effects were, that it made many people more uncertain, and made them fear their own neighbors. People made a safe room with thick doors and had guns hidden under their furniture. Many wanted a safe room because they were afraid of criminals in town. In Canada it's the opposite. They trust and take care of each other and they often don't lock their doors. That also brings some safety between people. Canada and the US have almost got the same laws about arms and the use of guns.
The second amendment:
One of the laws they have in the US, is the second amendment to the American Constitution. The law protects the right of people to keep and bear arms. One of the odd things the US does is that they offer a gun instead of interests. In the US news broadcast they always tell about shootings and murders in town and in Canada, they don’t.
What could be the reason:
The famous people also focus on the subject. A band named Boomtown Rats made a song called “I don’t like Mondays”. The song is about a girl, Brenda Ann Spencer, who got a gun from her father at Christmas.
She brought it to school and shot students and teachers. When she went to court and they asked her why she did it, she responded “I don’t like Mondays”. Many people think that punk and rock singer Marilyn Manson has a big influence on young people’s violent behavior. But Marilyn Manson says that the president also has an influence, because of the bombings he does on other countries. The popular cartoon show South Park, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, had also made an episode to express their feelings and thoughts about America’s history and the reason why America is using guns.
But what is the main reason for doing such a terrible thing? Could it be racism, bullying, bad grades? There is a lot of different theories, but no one actually knows why they do it.
Most of the discussion was also on the nature of High School cliques and the violence in movies and video games.
My own opinion:
I think it's a really bad excuse, that they watch more violent movies and video games. In Denmark we also watch violent movies and play violent video games, but we only had one school shooting, and it was in 1994 at the Aarhus University.
I just think that the reason is, that they can get guns at the local stores and so on, so when a young teenager having problems at school, they just pull out a weapon and shoot. That's the way they think it should be handled. But it's hard to change the weapon law now, and i think it proberly too late, because it's the part of the American culture.
