Considering what you know (and research) about this family, their Muslim culture and the ethical issues related to informed consent, would you encourage this family to sign the informed consent form? Why or why not?
As the home care nurse caring for the Housah-Ibrahim family, I would not encourage the family to sign the informed consent form. Through research of the Muslim culture, I have learned that Muslims respect privacy and modesty throughout their experience of receiving care (Rassool, 2015). By encouraging the family to sign the informed consent you are pushing them to participate in a research study that may expose them and make the family feel uncomfortable. With Fatima and Abdi having a new baby at home I think it is most important for them to focus their time and energy worry about their new daughter. I would present the information regarding the study in an education way. I would want to make sure to have the information in the language that is most understood and preferred. I would go to the visit with an interpreter with me, especially for Fatima. I would let the family know the level of commitment that would be needed to complete their part in the research study. Having a new baby in their life can make for less free time. Also, I would want to make sure to include in the information that participating in the study would help healthcare providers learn about experiences that Muslims have during birth. Collecting these experiences could help the providers gain some insight as to what needs to change. The change could lead to better experiences for other families of Muslim
