Initial Reflection: EAL Student Mentor
Initial Reflection: YWCA Building Bridges EAL Student Mentor Today was my first day being a mentor for EAL students in Argyle Elementary School. The school itself was a warm and welcoming environment with teachers greeting me and helping me find my way around the school. As I had first day jitters, I arrived at school twenty minutes early and waited in the staffroom. While I was waiting at the staffroom, I was surprised to find out that Mr. Panko, who was a vice-principal at Campbell Collegiate, was a principal at Argyle Elementary School. I was even more surprised when he recognized me first and warmly greeted me. At 1: 15 pm, I met with the program coordinator and she led my mentee, X, and I to a separate room where I could do the activities with her. I was …show more content…
After, I handed out a sheet where my mentee could either write or draw about herself such as her family, favorite colour, book, and movie. At first, she only answered by saying yes or no to the questions I have asked about pictures she drew. Personally, I thought this was due to the difficulty in forming a sentence as she is an EAL student. However, as soon as she opened up, she started to form simple sentences. I was also surprised that she was able to read sentences and write simple words on the sheet as well. Through this activity sheet, I even found out that we had several things in common such as our favorite TV show being Running Man, which is an Asian variety show popular in both Korea and China. Although I had planned to do a reading activity with her, I altered my plan as I wanted to teach through how she learns the best which was through drawing. This, I was able to find out through the activity sheet she did. By teaching her how to draw a self portrait, I also taught her about the different body parts, as well as the

Induction programs are professional experiences for beginning teachers that provide systematic and sustained assistance to ease the transition into teaching (Kauchak & Eggen, 2005, p.500). For example, an induction program assists new teachers with teacher workshops that cater to first year teachers to help them to be better successful in their new classrooms. Mentoring programs are experienced teachers who provide guidance and support for beginning teachers (Kauchak & Eggen, 2005, p.500). The difference between mentoring and induction programs is mentoring programs is done by a single person (an experienced teacher) who help guide you in succeeding inside your classroom, and an induction program is a program that contains workshops and provides first year teachers crucial information to be able to be successful in their new classrooms.…

The skill that I think Rabel could benefit from learning is rhyming. I could tell that Rabel had never been taught this before because he had a very confused face, which let me know this was the first time he was seeing this. I know that his teacher does nursery rhymes with the students, but from what I have noticed she only does them in Spanish. However, I don’t believe that she has devoted any time to teaching students about rhyme explicitly. Another thing that Rabel did, which allowed me to support my prediction was that he kept on saying words that did not have the same ending of the words in the assessment. One example of this was when he the word was dog and he said “mom.” I now think that not only had he never seen this before, but that he was focusing on the middle sound instead of the ending sound. As I continued this assessment I was also able to learn more about Rabel’s literacy strengths. In the following assessment Rabel quickly caught on and was able to match the beginning sound to the word. I was very impressed by the way he was able to blend sounds together. For Ms. Tatis blending is key to getting kindergarteners to learn how to read. I could tell that this was one of the assessments that he enjoyed the most because at one point he was blurting out the answers without me even finishing demonstrating the…

Coming into Xaverian as a new 9th grader I was quite nervous, I didn’t know many kids coming into Xaverian and wasn’t even positive Xaverian was the right fit for me. Over the summer I decided to participate in the Xaverian summer basketball clinic to see if I could get a feel for the Xaverian community before my school year started and to maybe even meet some new friends. The first day I showed up for the camp I met a senior named Billy LaHart. As soon as I met Billy I felt welcome, right away without even knowing me Billy was friendly, open and kind. It was a gigantic difference from the cold, too cool for school upperclassmen from my old school. Billy throughout the school year made me feel welcome at Xaverian and really helped me be able to relax so I could…

The four most important aspects of my role as a peer tutor would be showing leadership, communication, flexibility and having a positive impact on students. Each of these aspects are important and all contribute to my role as a peer tutor, without any of them I don't think I would perform as well in the classroom. Showing leadership and having a positive impact on others have changed over the course of the semester. At the beginning of the semester my leadership skills weren't as inclined as they currently are. Over the course of the semester, I have gained confidence and demonstrated leadership and initiative while peer tutoring. Also, I saw a change in how students approached me; they are presently more comfortable asking me questions in…

The sound of the crashing waves, the heat of the suns' rays, and the warmth of my family surrounded me. I was in California, and I was home. California is a place of diversity; one finds themselves with the opportunity of pursing who and what they want to do with their lives. Family is close, vacation is even closer, and home is near. Walking down the steps of a long, four hour flight, I was more than thrilled to step into the world of dreams. The west coast state brings: attraction, love, and a life full of happiness. In other words, it's a gift called life.…
