The Thirteen Colonies were part of the British Monarchy and the colonists had the same rights as any Englishmen. In the Declaration of Independence, it states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” In Pennsylvania, they adopted the right to freedom of Religion long before the United States declared independence. This was so because the British government was so far away that the colonists had to become self sufficient. Also, the colonists used the idea of a weak national government in the Articles of Confederation the colonists’ first government.
