First of all, the Patriots should declare independence from Great Britain because they are not protecting the colonies like they should.
In Social Studies Alive Chapter 10 it says that the fifth of March, 1770 a troop of redcoats fired at an unarmed group of colonists, killing five. This emphasizes that Great Britain is lacking in protecting the colonies. Moreover, they are even killing the colonists although they should be protecting the colonies after all they have done. In Social Studies Alive Chapter 10 it argues that in 1774, Great Britain closed Boston Harbor. This made many colonists angry and lose their jobs, some even feared they would acquire starvation. This implies that the British could do a better job at keeping the colonies safe which is why they do not need Great Britain, the colonies can protect themselves better than Great
Britain.
My second reason why the Patriots should declare independence is that they are being taxed unfairly. In www.oldcollierschools.com it states: “They passed the Navigation Act which restricted colonists from competing with British businesses. They also prevented colonists from selling their goods to countries other than Britain, even if the country was willing to pay a higher price than the British.” Not a great deal of people in the colonies produce enough money to pay the taxes, but Britain kept passing law after law that affected the colonies in a negative way. In www.c3teacher.org it says that the British passed an act called the Quartering Act in 1765. This act states that the colonists would have to provide homes for the British soldiers and they would often steal their jobs. This explains that the British are passing laws that influence the colonies negatively. This is unfair because the colonists do not have enough money to pay for all the taxes The Parliament is throwing at them. Although the Patriots should declare independence, some believe they should not. In Social Studies Alive Chapter 10 it explains that in the French and Indian War, the British were protecting the colonists. Though Great Britain protected the colonists from the Native Americans and France, they did not protect the colonies from anything else, proving that the British do not care about the colonies they only care about the colonies when they want to. In Social Studies Alive Chapter 10 it says that the British sent soldiers to the colonies. This is not important because although Great Britain protected the colonies, the British fought alongside the colonies to win land. However, they did pass many unfair laws and acts that make this detail seem as minuscule as it is. Therefore, it does not matter because the colonies were protected once in twenty years.
