March 27th, 2014 Several years ago, the introduction of social media, like Twitter and Facebook, ultimately took society by its horns, creating the initial interaction between the ever growing internet phase, and the everlasting television access networks. These social networking sites are referenced all over television shows, from the usage of entertainment and informing purposes, to fully getting the audience involved in the show itself. Some of these shows include Survivor, The Voice, The Bachelor, as well as much, much more. These shows tend to be known as multi-screen experiences, which engage the viewer in more ways than just “watching” the show. These shows combined with internet access allow people to “tweet” their opinions, re-watch shows if missed, as well as join in on live chats concerning the topic at hand. Video game consoles, new televisions like the Smart TV are bringing upon us a whole new way to watch TV. The issue with combing the two lies within necessity, complexity, and wants vs needs. With this fast-paced and ever changing technological world we live in, the internet and TV have ultimately could combine to make the media much more of an experience than ever. In today’s society, most everything involves the internet, from our cellphones to video game consoles, to now Television. In over a third of homes today, television has been connected to the internet via Xbox, Wii, HDMI cords, Blu Ray players, Smart TV’s, and so forth (Goetzl). With systems like these, it makes watching the shows viewers would normally watch on their television systems, but in a whole different way.
