Internet penetration
Internet penetration in Malaysia has increased steadily in the past 10 years, either through computers or mobile phones. Internet penetration refers to the percent of the population using the internet. It clearly means the number of people in Malaysia that have been using the internet since the internet was introduced to Malaysia in 1995. From that point on the internet usage of Malaysians has increased rapidly since 1995. Internet penetration in Malaysia has been divided into two groups. That is, Household and non household internet usage. Household internet usage for example, individual using the internet at home or families that use the internet at home. Non household internet usage for example, people who surf the internet in cyber cafes and convenient areas with free Wi-Fi such as Mc Donald’s and Starbucks. People that use household Internet usually do their work at home. Non Household internet users are usually individuals that do their work or research out of their homes. So why do people rely so much on the internet so much it’s because, people want to connect, people want to discover, people want to be heard. Everything now is just at the tip of your fingers. According to Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusuf, there are 25.3 million internet users in Malaysia or represents 89 per cent of the Malaysia’s population. They had surfed up to 1.3 billion of websites with an average of 1.7 website per day. This statistic shows high penetration of Internet in the country.

The internet was introduced to Malaysia in 1995. The usage of the internet in Malaysia increased in the year 2000. The usage of the internet then grew at a rapid pace from the year 2003 to 2007 due to the growth of search engines. For example, Yahoo, Google and our very own Malaysian search engine, Cari Internet. Because of these search engine a lot of people are using the internet to do their research, work, assignments and self enjoyments.

From looking at figure 5 a varity of trends can be shown. When focusing on internet users a very slow rate of growth can be shown, this may be due to the small amount of countries that are able to get access to the World Wide Web due to connections. Over a 10 year period from 1998 to 2008 there can be seen a major rise in the use of the internet. As the internet is a relatively new device it is clear that those less developed countries would take time to get hold of it. 1990 was quite early for a developing country to use the internet but is is clear as the world has become more globalized and developed the internet usage has shot up. This is due to a technological advance around the world and slowly the developing countries got hold of it. For the internet to be set up it has a lot of costs to fit the cables and software. Developing countries clearly take time to collect these costs so internet can be used effectively. Also some developing countries are more developed than others and there links with the developed world are a lot better, for example China where the internet would be widely used due to the amount of contact they have with developed countries. When TNC’s are set up in the developing countries they bring with the technology which can cause a multiplier effect in that country. It is clear that there are only a limited number of countries that have the luxury of FDI which can get them started and technology like the internet put in place. The physical barriers as well are a concern and it is possible that not until recently these have been broken making a big rise is internet usage.…
