Schemata: Knowledge structures that help us interpret, remember, and organize new information
-Influenced by culture, personal experiences, etc.
-Act as a guide or filter for the viewing new stimuli
-Help us make sense of potentially ambiguous information
Types of Schemata Self Schemata reflect peoples views of themselves and guide how they process information about themselves. Event Schemata also called scripts, help people recognize the typical ways in which a sequence of actions tends to unfold. Role Schemata Provide information about appropriate behavior based on social categories. Stereotypes Person Schemata Type of Person Relational Schemata different types of relationships
Cognitive Processes Interpersonal Expectancies guide our communication with others, how we think people will or ought to communicate with us Attributions assessment of the cause of an action or behavior or the degree of responsibility that someone or something had for the action or behavior Person Perception our attempt to determine what others are like and whether we like them Stereotypes
