According to Carl Jung, the psyche energy flows in the various direction (Ryckman, 2000). When the primary wants are not met or external motivation decreased the individual gets addicted to illicit drugs and alcohol consumption.
In the article Marvin-Humann (2008) the results show that the external motivation and the individual needs determine the craving level. The interpersonal therapy, however, increases the internal motivation level which develops the self-esteem and reduces the craving level. This would provide them an insight to the addiction and seeks medical assistance. The primary wants like proper housing, income to meet the basic requirement if not met the chances of retrogression is even higher.
When the primary want is met it motivates the victim to continue treatment and withdraw from the drugs abuse (Marvin-Humann, 2008).
There are six stages of motivation – pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse (Marvin-Humann, 2008). In the relapse stage, the psyche energy flows in various direction forcing the victim to the retrogression state. Yoga helps the victim to stay focused with the practice of several postures, meditation and breathing technique. This controls the psyche energy to flow in the positive
direction.
