My Interpretation of Respect as A Concept respect can be viewed in several different ways; the first way that comes to mind is in regard to a person’s excellence, a person’s ability to perform tasks, quality they possess and finally something that is considered a display of a personal quality or ability. However respect does not revolve around people. Respect can be shown as proper acknowledgment also seen as courtesy or following a law. Respect as proper acknowledgment, for example respecting the flag. Next respect can be viewed as self-respect. Lastly, respect is used to honor a decision or a person’s rights. To summarize respect can be given, gained or earned.
The Interpretation of Respect Through Other Resources …show more content…
According to the College of Nurses Ontario and the Therapeutic-Nurse Client Relationship practice standards “respect is the recognition of the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual regardless of socio-economic status, personal attributes and the nature of the health problem.”(CNO,3).
The CNO had also previously stated that respect should be given to clients and their families from the nurse while caring for the patient “developing collaborative partnerships with clients and families that respect their needs, wishes, knowledge, experience, values and believes.”(CNO, 3). From this statement we can presume that the CNO believe respecting ones patient encompasses all of the stated areas and that it is essential to a nurse client relationship to embrace
respect.
The Description of Respect Respect contains many attributes, the peel district school board describes respect and the attributes as the following “Treating others, yourself, and the environment with high regard and value” Respect is demonstrated when one treats the property and possessions of others with carefulness, follows the rules that apply to them, is polite to all people they encounter, realise the significance of yourself, body and personal rights and finally display thoughtful and worth to yourself and others. The concepts of trust and respect go hand in hand, without one the other would cease to exist in a relationship, the University of Washington School of medicine indicated that “When physicians communicate with patients, being honest is an important way to foster trust and show respect for the patient. Patients place a great deal of trust in their physician, and may feel that trust is misplaced if they discover or perceive lack of honesty and candor by the physician”. This shows us that without respect for the patients right the physician and relationship may lose all trust. Next, some factors that can lead to respect included open mindedness to differences, Jarvis physical examination & health assessment states that “Conveying respect for differences helps build trust and welcome patients to share their understandings. Research continues to show that patients are very quick to sense when health care providers are judging them negatively” (Jarvis physical examination & health assessment, 40). Without respecting differences and being open minded you may prevent some patients from feeling comfortable enough to share information. When a person is respected often it results in positive feelings such as being flattered.
How is Respect relevant to professional nursing care?
Respect in the care of older patients in acute hospitals article stated that “Respect is defined as a central concept and a fundamental professional value in nursing. It is considered the basis for adopting a proper attitudinal, cognitive and behavioural orientation towards all persons.”( Koskenniemi, Leino-Kilpi, Suhonen,1). This article states that without respect in nursing we would not have the open mindedness need to be able to cognitively under all clients and their behaviour’s.
