Interpreting the sports subculture in the view of a sociological perspective is the main aim of this essay. Unlike the people who assume that being part of sports is helpful to nurture good physical health, there are some people who dedicate their lives for …show more content…
it. The blissful moments and hidden struggles faced by the sports people are mainly altered by the interactions they have with the people around them. However, the subsequent example from my personal life would help me to further elaborate on this topic. At the age of 10, I started playing hockey. Ever since, it became my favorite sport.
I became fond of it when I was in senior year and worked hard to fulfill my dream. I always believed that my parents would allow me to be part of my high school team despite religious, cultural and family issues. Couple of months away from my selections, I was advised by my parents to drop it. Nevertheless of my efforts and dedication to the game, I was out of the team.
I pretended to be happy with their decision. Few days later, my parents confessed me the reason why they told me not to be part of it. Although, I am not surprised by their reasons. But, I was upset about the way the society works. In my culture, girls are not allowed to be part of sports. The social structures such as micro structures, meso structures, macro structures and global structures play an important role here. My parents main concern was regarding the opinion of my family, friends and peers about me being part of sports team. Classes and economic relations are also one of the reasons for my parent’s disapproval
(Brym and Lie, 2012:8). From what I saw, these speculations are only about women. The men in our community are allowed to choose their own career pathway. Irrespective of these introspections, my main concern was about the norms, values and practices that I need to alter and adapt to be part of the society.
The theory that would be relevant to my situation is Feminism. Feminism, the sociological thought which deals with the uncertainty of the gender integrity (Brym and Lie, 2012:7). In my view, people who proclaim that men and women are considered equally regardless of norms and values is a myth. In one way or the other, women are oppressed by men which is otherwise known as patriarchy (Brym and Lie, 2012:6). Gender plays an exceptional role in feminism.
With these thoughts, norms and values, I was disappointed that I would not be able to accomplish my dreams. In spite of my parent’s disapproval, I was escorted in the right way. By meeting other people who went through my situation, brought me courage and motivation to do the right things. I was fortuitous to be the first one from my family to study in Canadian university. I realized that even though the norms, values and practices in the society have a significant effect on people, there will always be a chance for us to choose our own path by getting accustomed to those macro structures. These social structures such as such as micro structures, meso structures, macro
structures and global structures would gradually help people to comprehend and tailor themselves to these norms which would help them in playing a good role in social interactions. Sociological imagination is defined as the realistic awareness of the relationship between personal experience and wider society(Mills, 1959) (Brym and Lie, 2012:7). Considering the sociological imagination, the micro and macro structures have an heavy impact on sports sub culture. I started playing hockey as a hobby, but I do not have any specific speculations to be part of it. By spending more time on it, I became more of fond of it. It seemed to me like a leadership quality by being part of the high school team. Besides, as a member of high school team, it would be imply that there is no difference between men and women, which moderately reduce the domination of men. Therefore, regardless of these social structures, if we intend to adapt the norms and values, then we can lead our lives of our own choice.
