Intervention For Trent
Trent is a five year old African American male. He is in his first two weeks of his first year of school. During a morning walk through, Trent was found in the hallway having a yelling and screaming competition with a teacher aide. The teacher and aide had labeled Trent, stating that he was rowdy and aggressive and suggested he be placed in a special education program. This suggestion is concerning for Trent because it could mean a misdiagnosis of a learning disability because of the teacher’s views of African Americans as being slow learners with behavior problems. The white teachers have known Trent for less than two weeks, tried one intervention that involved time-out, yelling, and screaming and have stereotyped him because of his race. Trent, like all children, regardless of race or gender, has a right to an education where he can learn and succeed in life. A new intervention is required.
Summary
It was once said by someone that “A teacher should inspire a child to reach academic success; a parent should inspire their child to use that success in a way that influences positive change in the world.” This quote influenced a new intervention for Trent. One limitation that must be considered before using this intervention is that it will require effort from everyone to work together in order to make the approach work. The time and energy required for a collaboration intervention may not be easy for all parties to participate in. If one person does not give a full effort, it is possible that the whole intervention will be useless. Another limitation would be that if the student had to move schools due to a move and the new school did not implement this learning strategy. If this is the case, the student would feel lost and unimportant where before the student’s education was focused on

    In this book, written by Johnathan Kohl, we are given a rare and candid glimpse inside the educational system in the city of Boston in the 1960’s. As Kohl describes the treatment that minority students endured at the hands of their teachers, it becomes clear that the title of the book is an accurate depiction of the times. As we read about teachers calling students terrible names and treating minority students with contempt and disgust, it is apparent how the spirit of the students were slowly dying inside. Although this was over fifty years ago, this type of treatment still occurs everyday in schools all over the nation. Whether a child be a minority race, have a learning disability or have behavior issues, it is not uncommon for them to be treated in a way that negatively effects their self esteem, causes them to dislike school and eventually, little by little, takes away their hope. No child should be left hopeless. Everyone needs something to be proud of, whether it be one small talent they possess or just one person who believes in and respects them. It is the job of a teacher to build a child’s self-esteem and self-respect and above all, their hope for the future. Without hope, a child will not aspire or dream. There must be procedures in place to ensure that teachers know what is and isn’t acceptable in terms of interacting with children. I have experienced this first hand in my personal life. My son has Asperger’s syndrome. He can be difficult to handle. Because he misreads social cues he wold often misunderstand what his teachers were asking him and answer incorrectly. He repeatedly told me that his teacher yelled at him and didn’t like him. He wouldn’t even tell them when he was sick because he didn’t want to make them angry.
