It was almost 11 p.m. when Caroline Portal left the office. She was exhausted. The day had been filled with one meeting after another, and she wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and get some sleep. But she couldn’t head home before stopping by the local 24-hour supermarket. The store was enormous—18 aisles of food, pharmaceuticals, stationery, and books, even small appliances. Squinting in the bright lights, Caroline made her way to the health-and-beauty aisle and stood, staring, at the display of La Shampoo on the top shelf. Nearby, grouped with other conditioners, was the La Shampoo conditioner.

Introduced in 1975 and targeted at women between the ages of 15 and 30, La Shampoo had a stylish image that had immediately become popular. The line had quickly advanced from a strong West Coast regional presence to a solid 4% share of the national market—a position it had held more or less steadily for 14 years. La Shampoo’s basic products and packaging had been modified several times over the years, but its look had remained essentially unchanged. And its slogan, “La Shampoo: For the Look and Feel of France,” had stayed the same since day one. In 1989, the line had begun a very slow descent, but the company hadn’t really addressed the problem until two years ago, when it named Caroline brand manager.
At first, Caroline called for a new packaging design. She knew that La Shampoo was in trouble, but maybe a quick pick-me-up would do the trick. The ad agency backed her up and developed a modest “new look” campaign. This repackaging had caused a lot of tension at the office. Most of the people who worked on La Shampoo had been with the company for years and couldn’t imagine anything other than a slight variation on the tall, slim, blue plastic bottles with the beige labels and cursive lettering.     The shampoo market was a $1.2 billion industry that was at a maturity point in its life cycle. Unit sales within the industry had only been growing at a compound rate of 2% since 1978. Market share was extremely valuable; 1 point market share was worth roughly $10 million in sales and produced 40% gross margins. The Suave brand, a product under the largest division of Helen Curtis Industries, was “at a watershed”, thought Bob Thomas, the VP of marketing. With unit sales shares and operating margin percentages on the decline, as well as the competition for shelf space, the Suave brand faced a critical threshold.     L‘Oréal was an established brandname in the US for haircare products, which should have eased successful market entry into the facial cream category. By introducing Plenitude, a new brand with a foreign sound, L'Oreal had not established category membership effectively for each range of products. Customers either were not aware of or did not appreciate the key points of parity to make this connection. The marketing mix was not tuned to the US customer and therefore the key message was lost to clarify the product benefits to the customer. Plenitude had become market leader in France by targeting all potential buyers. However, the demographic usage in France appears different from the US, where usage of face creams is used over a more diverse age range. US advertisements were based on a successful french marketing campaign, where one product offered the benefit of ‘reducing signs of aging' , displayed with a ‘french-looking' woman. Two of the five skin care segments were targeted, only 40% of the total market. This resulted in entry into the treatment cream market - more of a niche market than the market for daily facial creams. The results of the perceptual mapping (exhibits 9 and 10) indicate Plenitude offers advanced technology and would appeal to premium customers prepared to spend higher prices for the best results.     Premarital sex is something which almost everyone knows about. Some proudly proclaims that they engage in while others do it secretly. However, there are still some who do it but are unaware of such term. Different people view it differently: for some it’s acceptable while for some it’s a big sin. At present, there is an increasing amount of discussions in newspaper and magazines in which various things attributed to premarital sex are discussed. It is said that the Philippines is facing this persistent challenge about premarital intercourse. Since sex is involved, this is certain to produce a number of strong reactions. Nevertheless, it is important to be careful in making such reactions. Sex is an intimate act between individuals which includes genital contact (Baumer and South, 2001). Accordingly, it was designed for married couples to enjoy, hence the famous quote: “True love waits until marriage.” The norms of Philippine society say that it is not normal or it is immoral to engage in premarital sex, but despite this, people just cannot wait until they get wedded. This accounts for the prevalence of premarital sex in the country. At present, one can say that it’s normal to know people who had sex already. But what’s alarming is the rapid growth of the number of people who had sexes before marriage. Different researches show the rise of this number. In the last century, only a few, if not zero, gave themselves to premarital sex. This information if compared to present data would give an overwhelming difference. Statistics in 2008 showed that premarital sex was prevalent in30% of the Filipinos. This figured is actually small when compared to western countries. In the USA, 75% of the women would say that they already experienced premarital sex when they reached the age of nineteen.
